All,
I've alluded to this in other threads, but, please note:

I have syndicated several photo blogs from folks here in RFF into my "Unofficial RFF Community Blog."

It is located at: http://photos.kaiyen.com/rffBlog

What I've done is subscribed my WordPress instance to the RSS/Atom feeds from various blogs. The entries from those blogs show up in the "Feeds from Other Blogs" category as entries. Links go directly to the source blogs, and commenting on my blog is turned off - viewers must go to the source blog to comment. There is a (rather untidy) list of the source blogs on the right nav bar.

Please check out the site at least once. If your blog is on there, let me know if that is okay. I will unsubscribe feeds if people so wish. If it is not and you want it on there, just reply to this thread. Please - I am trying to limit these to photo blogs - if you have other material in your blog it really gets into a gray area.

I will be adding a Creative Commons license restriction to the blog soon, and will absolutely, postively indicate that content copyright belongs to the originating photographer, not to me.

A RFF meta-blog, WAY COOL !

Yep my blog is there and except for not showing the pics it's ok 🙂

It's nice to see them all together in one place, I say thumbs up and thanks !

Jorge,
I am not taking a feed from RFF itself, no. Is there a reason to? Wouldn't I just...replicate the "new posts" feature...?

Joe,
You've been added.

I have noticed that the WP plug-in I'm using throws up a ton of errors with the blogs whose photos to not display in line. I think it has to do with the way the atom or rss tags are formed. perhaps a 1.0 vs. 1.1 vs 2.0 vs. atom .3 issue. I will research it, but I'm pretty sure it's a feed issue.

why thumbnails don't load on some feeds

why thumbnails don't load on some feeds

All,
Lynn asked me about why some posts to the rff community blog don't include thumbnails while some do. I think I figured it out.

The blog is driven by WordPress. Apparently, WP only displays thumbnails in a blog post using an actual link to that image. So it would need to be <a href="domain/dir/image_name.jpg">here's some text </a> or something like that.

However, a lot of blog posts are using just <img src> tags. Which are like <img src="dir/image_name.jpg alt="alt text">.

I just did a test where I tried the <img src> method and WP will not display the actual image int he post. So if you're blog uses <img src> and, therefore, your RSS feed does the same, your thumbnails will not display.

I'm not sure how to fix that, though, other than digging into some RSS and Atom stuff.

Daniel,
As you and Lynn have since pointed out to me, my theory is all bunk. Oh well.

If it's not the feed...perhaps it's direct linking? Maybe direct linking is turned off?

I'll toss this out, because I like a simpler look: would it be possible to turn off images entirely and just go with the blog headers and an abstract? Some of the images seem to disrupt the formatting.

🙂

That may not be the problem at all... you should check if your host provider has "image theft" protection on.

It's a set of rules that is set on the Apache server (for simplicity's sake let's just stick to Apache) which essentially won't allow an image to display if the referrer is not the original site.

i.e. if my site is "timetomakethedonuts.com" and the website "homerlovesthempink.org" has am <img src> tag to "timetomakethedonuts.com", then the Apache server at "timetomakethedounts.com" will deny the image to be displayed, because it came from "homerlovesthempink.org" and not "timetomakethedonuts.com"

Clear as mud? 🙂
