I think Semilog may have posted about how to do this in a reply before, but someone made a video of a technique that uses the ovf for framing and using the mag button to get temporarily into mag evf focus mode and then return to normal ovf mode.

Are the frame lines really that bad on these cameras? In the final shot the camera he shoots a photo of is perfectly centered, yet when looking thru the ovf it's way off to one side. Seriously considering an x pro or xe1 but that puts me off somewhat. I'm sure there's a reason for it though, anyone care to chime in?

I think the corrected frame line (the blue line) for the X-Pro1 is pretty conservative (I found it interesting he had it set to 32mm for a 35mm lens as well).

If you're looking into buying an XE-1 you won't have that problem as you won't have an OVF to have parallax error anyways.

Probably the biggest selling point of EVF only cameras like the X-E1 is the framing accuracy, can't be beaten. What you see is what the sensor is seeing. There are of course a number of disadvantages too, delay and lagging being the most prominent in my mind, though better now than ever before. Another is the lack of framelines, no area outside what is being captured can be a pain if you are used to seeing what may come into the frame. Unless of course the EVF is more or less 1:1, in which case you can shoot with both eyes open.

I'm so torn, really want to like these cameras but the viewfinder thing bugs me. I havent heard much good feedback regarding x pro ovf, and i just dont know if i could get along with an evf. I played with an OMD at a store yesterday (to suss out the evf) and just wanted to put the camera down to be honest.. I'm sure if I owned one of the fuji's and had it set up the way I like all would be good..

If u can find a store in your area w/ either the x100 or the xp1, handling it live really helps. The ovf works pretty much the same in both. The x10, is a totally different beast in terms of ovf and should not be compared.

This trick really only works if you are far away from your subject. Framing is ridiculous if your closer then around 4 feet. Still a neat trick tho.

I went from an NEX7 to a XPro1, been using for a little over a week with only MF lens and I must say that I am more then happy with the EVF. I had my doubts coming from the amazing EVFs that Sony use. But all in all I'm extremely satisfied. Though I should add that speed is not an issue for me, as I'm not a "street photographer". So maybe I'm in the minority with my glee 😀
