Hi guy's,

Since a year and a half ago I've got into photography, mostly film photography. The thing is that the G.A.S. hit me right on the cheeks when I started. Now I've come across the need to sell/give cameras away to have money for this hobby (and to repair a camera). They were too many to be stopped and to die on their place. I've now only retained the ones that I want to keep and the 'junk' - no value.

With all this, I wanted to know what you guys do with cameras that appear to have no value whatsoever and that no one will buy them and you want to rid away but still, would like to give a life for them.

What do you guys do?

Thank you

What's your definition of "junk"? What are some examples of the items you desire to move on? Might assist with suggestions.
Cheers,
Brett

Olympus mju zoom dlx (with broken pin from the battery door, but still holds) working correctly and cleaned, a Komet K35 (lomoish camera), Olympus TRIP 500 working nicely, a Kodak Instamatic 500 that I will try to clean and make it work (the camera is working, even the selenium meter is working correctly) but it has cement on its components and lens so I don't know I will manage to clean it), and, when I repair the camera, I might give/sell my Praktica Super TL1000 or my Praktica PL Nova 1B.

The Super TL1000 is OK. Not an exciting camera perhaps but competent enough and able to take plenty of decent lenses. The Nova somewhat less so, but again, if it's lasted this long without breaking it may last a while yet. Photography students may get some use out of either so local universities/colleges which provide tuition in film photography may be able to use them perhaps? Instamatics are indeed in the "junk" category for me but perhaps a Facebook group for your local area may yield new homes for them even if merely for decorative purposes?
Cheers

We have a thread here on RFF just for such instances,

Check it out!

Will use that, even thought I'm sure no one will grab it since the shipping rates are messy here.

Actually the Nova was very capable. It's brand, but I'm sure I will keep it. It's very dear for me. It must be the TL1000 to go (which is mostly mint-).

BTW: Forgot to answer this. To offer this to schools wouldn't do anything. It would worse their fate. Schools that have photography classes (only have 2 on my area but only one uses film photography), require better cameras to work.

Some cameras, lenses junk I've had went into garbage bin. I learned this trick from one professional photographer!
Some, still working ones went to local "goodwill". And plenty was sold on ebay. Even non working ones. Some of it was sold fairly quick.

I have another ten or so cameras, lenses and accessorizes to sell, again...

But for me, being stupid maybe, throwing these tools away, kinda hurts me?
Dunno how to explain it... but I think I like mostly the idea of having someone that will take care or at least give some life beyond me.

Sorting out junk which never meant to be working is goodwill thing. Do you dump toaster which was purchased for 20$ and quit after two weeks, because it is build as 20$ one? Or do you give it to someone else to drive them nuts with use, trying to repair this junk?
I have seen it not only with cameras, lenses. "Do you want this "thing" it just doesn't work?", "No, this "thing" is junk, put it on recycle". Not always, not all, but some "things" are.

It's a good point but it's sort of my silly POV to this situation - and only this.
It's stupid - I know...

If you feel emotionally attached to something, there is no hurry for you to throw it away. Just put it away somewhere. One day, you will find it again, and think "Why did I keep this junk?"
At that time, you can throw it away.

ebay 99p start, people will buy anything. I am always 100% honest in the description about what i know, how well it works, and let the buyers figure out if they want it - you never know what people are looking for. I bought about 80% of a Beauty Lightomatic that was literally a bag of bits for 99p because I was repairing a Konica (the same Copal shutters), the seller probably wondered what I could possibly use this junk for. As long as you're not misleading people, just put it out there. Trips seem to be getting a good price these days though!

I usually put them in small lots on ebay. Three to five cameras (don't let shipping get too expensive or people won't bid) start at $1, and am just glad if one person bids to get rid of broken or "worthless" stuff.

I offer them for free as parts cameras here on RFF or APUG classifieds. Buyer just pays shipping.

For someone looking for a wind lever, battery cover or particular size screw, etc., it can save a lot of time and trouble.

You can always use them to decorate your living spaces.

I found out a long time ago not to get too attached to my cameras. They are just machines, made to perform a certain set of functions. And if they no longer can, or have outlived their usefulness, they are either collectables, or clutter.

You have to decide which, and then act on that determination.
