Though I have not yet purchased a G1, I feel the same way. It will be a nice compliment for me. Size and weight of my DSLR (K10d) are my major complaints. More so of decent lenses than the bodies which you can find quite small. The M43 system will allow designers to develop quality lenses which are smaller without compromising speed. I look forward to that development in the system.

I want a Pen F adapter for my tiny 42/1.2. Any ideas when that will come ?

Yep, you actually can, it'll zoom in for focusing just like the EVF.

untill the g1, i usually hesitated as to which camera i would take out with me for the day, and now there is no thought given.
it's the g1 and kit lens. i am not addicted to fast lenses so the slow 14-45 works well for me. iso 800 shots look good to me if i need speed.
when the 20/1.7 arrives i suspect i will bolt it onto the g1 body for the smallest and lightest day kit i have ever used.
it's small and fun, easy to carry, has sharp lenses and the bonus of using m mount lenses - what's to think about??

When I was at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this month, a Panasonic rep told me they were going after this rather large pool of potential customers who wanted more than a P&S, but were intimidated by a full-blown DSLR.
As someone mentioned, they have been happily surprised by the interest expressed by more advanced users.
I got mine on Monday. So far, I'm quite happy with the purchase, though I'm still waiting on my adaptor that'll let me use my M-mount lenses.

I actually think you are totally wrong there ....
As far as I can see Panasonic have a brilliant context in the development of their cameras ... the LX3 now the G1.... they both serve a large part of the market.... they have thought this out very very carefully ... and well, and I think they have achieved what they set out for, and will continue to do so in future, adding a new dimension to digital photography in the broadest sense of the word.
They have their act together and will surprise us time after time, untill others might catch up.
There are rumors (only rumors) of the G1 with M mount ... this would be the downfall for the M8, except for the up-market badge related people whom don't give a flying fiddle for quality of pictures anyway...
I think panasonic know what they do and are on the right track....

From the samples, totally not impressive. Bad plastic look with blown highlights and synthetic colors. All that with a crop factor of x2 and the most uninspiring mainstream look one can imagine. Thanks...

Totally not. I cant imagine anyone trading his or her M8 against this thing. We are talking about tool vs toy.

Like every other camera, the G1 isn't for everyone, of course. That's the beauty of the free market and competition. 🙂

I have both. The G1 ain't no M8.....not to say it's bad, but it isn't an M8. I find it amusing, how so many people complained and are still complaining about the crop factor of the M8, but they want a G1 even though it doubles the focal length of any lens adapted to it. Your M wide angle lenses are useless unless you have the CV 12. The CV 15 is only a 30 on the G1.
Lets see what the future may bring.

I'm sure price tag (1/10th the cost of an M8) has something to do with that willingness to accept the 2x crop factor.
Heh. The G1 is not a focal length doubler. Those are called 'teleconverters.' 🙂 The focal length of the lens remains the same.
The G1 is more accurately described as a 'field of view halver' if that is a word.
So, 24mm effective is useful, but a 30mm effective is useless? Hmm....I wonder why the kit lens covers 30mm effective if it is useless.
Actually, many find all sorts of focal lengths useful on the G1. No, they might not be the same field of view as on other cameras, but that doesn't make them useless.
The future may bring a 7-14mm zoom and a 20/1.7 pancake. And a 14-140. At least.

In my case I favor 50mm and up. I could never get use to 35mm with which I started on an M4, always lost in and on subject matter.
The introduction of Fx format was a good thing, I could use 50 1.4's and 85mm 1.8, relatively cheap and high quality lenses.
Having done a review of the focal length I use most it comes down to 75mm to 120mm (50-80 FX) for 40% of my shots and 120mm-200mm for 30%, 200-300mm 16% leaving roughly 15% for normal and wide-angle... and these wide angle shots were the ones I definitely enjoyed the least (family at christmas and stuff like that).
I welcome the 2x focal length, I like the Panasonic 45-200mm IS lens, although not the focal quality of the nikon 70-200 Is its lighter and highly usable another reason for buying the G1.
I will most certainly buy the/any wide angle zoom that Pana. introduces as well as the 20 1.7 if only for dof purposes, but the current standard lens collection is fine with and covers 90% of my needs .... they could however be a tad more fast.
Prior to the G1 I tried the 420 but the IQ thereof doesn't didn't come close to that of the G1, other than buying the huge 50-150 which would of made the small format of the 420 pointless.
As said the G1 up untill now has served me well, 2000 shots further and still within "return period" I am not thinking about returning it, I have grown quite attached to it actually and with the 14-45 it fits into my Barbour jacket nicely.
It might not be perfect but it's innovative and perhaps the basis of a new direction, and this all for the less than an M8 Sapphire glass replacement!! .... should make one think

I have both too and sincerely enjoy the M8 (when its not in service that is) luckily I am able to afford it all, but look at the price tag difference.
I havent yet tried any CV lenses on my M8 or analog Leica equipement, seems rather pointless to me actually buying a 5K camera and then reverting to non-leica glass. Leica cameras are far from the bees-knees but it's the glass that actually does it. But this being a totally different discussion altogether.
