G1 + the CamearQuest adapter + Leitz Wetzlar Summicron-C 1:2/40.

No problem.

Scale focusing: distance 5 meters, "f/8 and be there".

Nice image, thanks for sharing. I hope to see more street photos from your G1/Summi combo.

My pleasure.

All my M8 lenses from 40 mm up seem to work just fine on G1.

collapsible / LTM lenses ?

collapsible / LTM lenses ?

Hi Ukko,

Have you (or any other G1 + Leica lens user) already tried a collapsible lens, or an old LTM lens with the LTM to M mount convertor on the G1 ?

I'm quite curious about whether the collapsibles can collapse on the micro 4/3 cameras. I have a Summitar that I absolutely adore, so it'd be nice if I could reuse it on a new digital camera.

Peter.

I just tried a Summitar f2 LTM lens on a LTM to M adaptor plus a M to M4/3 adaptor . The LTM to M adaptor increases the depth of the M to M4/3 adaptor by less than 1mm ie I imagine the LTM to M4/3 adaptor (which I dont have) is less than 1mm deeper or thicker than the 8.5mm deep/thick M to M4/3 adaptor.

Bad news is that the collapsed Summitar will not collapse fully .. it collides with the gold contacts in the camera. In theory you could use it if you are very careful and only partially collapse the lens. When it hits the gold contacts they might get damaged if you push too hard. I estimate the collapsed Summitar is 4mm too long to collapse fully and safely into the camera.

Maybe you could imagine it is a rigid lens and keep it locked rigid ... or wrap some tape around the central sliding lens tube so it cannot collapse ... or wrap just enough tape around the front part of the lens so it just partially collapses without hitting the gold contacts. Wrapping tape around the "trombone slide" part is an easy mod. but whether its practical or not depends on if you still wish to use the lens fully collapsed on an LTM camera.

Thus mount/use it at your own risk.

Cheers

Thanks, Dunk.

Did you also try to make photos with the Summitar ? It could be a nice 100/f2 equivalent portrait lens :)

PS: I'm really just waiting for a small m4/3 body with small lenses, but the threads about M lenses are quite fascinating.

Not used the Summitar yet but will try it asap and post pix ... I have LOADS of mini projects to try with the G1 ... currently using Leitz Photars and bellows with it ... also Canon FD 200mm macro lens ... next will try Canon FD 50mm macro plus bellows and tubes and Canon 50 1.2L and 85 1.2L ... then all my Leica M lenses .. and the LTM screw lenses including 50mm Summar ... and Olympus 4/3 lenses inc macro lens ... and Contax 60mm macro .. and Leica R lenses ... latter three via the Panasonic 4/3 to M4/3 adaptor plus the Contax and Leica 4/3 mount adaptors. Also have Minolta lenses to try when can source an adaptor.

I'm really enjoying using the G1 ... it's a very versatile tool.

So, how usable is the focus of 40 to 50mm manual lenses on the G1 with moving subjects? I am seriously thinking of getting a G1 to use with my Canon 50mm F0.95 lens for street photography and theater photography. The crop factor would be actually advantageous to me with that lens.

One can always use "scale focusing" - distance 5 meters, f/8, if there is enough light to stop movement. Focusing is then "no problem."
