G10? really?

ok, so i hope someone can help me out here. everywhere i go it's G10 this G10 that. reviews are glowing and folks all over the world sing it's praises.

the thing is though, the lag between when i press the shutter and THE TEN BLOODY MINUTES later the camera responds is maddening. i have run it manual focus, av mode, c1 (set up as manual focus) etc etc and still it takes a bloody nap first before shooting! even if i hold that little, obstinate shutter down halfway and wait until the "decisive moment" shows up it the G10 is still napping on the job.

i am happy with iq, happy with ergonomics and all the other things but i fear i might have to give this one the big thumbs down soon. is there anything i am missing?

...with your G10. I've shot several thousand pictures with several different G-10's and I have never had the delay of which you speak.

No delay problem with mine. I'm actually pleased with the very low lag time. Tell us how your camera is setup.

well i might be over reacting re: the wait but it still is maddening.

all right then... i more often than not run it in c1, manual focus, aperture priority. it's not really 10 minutes but it sure is slow.

Agreed. Coupled with noise and CA as well as average IQ.

Gave mine to the wife - both noisy and not very sharp ! 🙂

i am not a super iq stickler guy preferring to "fill it up with subject matter" instead. that doesn't mean throw iq out the window but sharp as tack pictures of the cat don't rev my engine none.

no, like i mentioned i was exaggerating a tad. it may have "minimal" lag but it sure ain't minimal enough!

Canon's G series has always suffered from shutter lag. Obviously you've exagerated and it's not as bad as many, but still way too much for capturing the decisive moment. Ricoh GRD and Panasonic LX-3 are better in this regard.

I sold mine G10 very quickly because of the shutter lag. I tried many settings but it was always there.

Hmmm.... having used a friend's G9 extensively for 2 weeks, I find the camera very responsive once focus is set (shutter depressed half way).

Knowing your work, I find it hard to believe your missing to many decisive moments......but, the lag is more with the G10 than with the G9. I sold my 10 and now have the 9 as a zoomie camera again....I hate zoomies...... Maybe you should try a full format on the card....I know, I know...but I can't think of any other reason that the camera is dragging....

i am going to pick up a friends g9 for a bit and see what gives there. i will try a full format as well.

barring any success there i'll stick with the dp1 for now.

Are you using the LCD to compose the shot? Or the viewfinder? Because I've always thought that using the LCD increases the lag. The camera has to focus, lock focus, adjust and lock exposure and then take the photo -- all while updating the LCD.

Long live manual focus film cameras!

(My wife grew to hate her Canon digital P&S for this very reason. She could never get casual shots of our daughter, because by the time the camera actually took the photo, the moment had long since passed. And she was using the viewfinder.)
