Iam thinking to buy a digital canon G9 camera but i was wondering if is possible to use an external viewfinder as the in-camera is very small for my eyes.It will be perfect if i can connect it to the hot-shoe Adapter.
I use manly 35mm or 50mm external viewfinders. So i will "lock" the lense on these mm.

Did anyone had tried this successfully ?

Thank you,
Michael.

The G9 has a zoom lens. I have never heard of an external zoom viewfinder. In addition if you wanted to use an external VF mounted on the flash shoe at a particular focal length you would have to convert the focal length to account for the equivalent focal length of the G9 lens which is designed for the small sensor.
I hope you understand what I mean.

I've seen threads on dpreview indicating that people have had luck with Voigtlander viewfinders. Obviously, you have to pick just one focal length, do the conversion, and make that as one of the custom presets for the camera.

You can of course use a viewfinder with the G9, as hunghang and Kurt said already. Be aware the internal flash will be disabled by a small switch in the hotshoe.

Thank you all for replying.
My only wonder now it will be the 4/3 camera format vs the 35mm VF.
Hmm.Ofcaurse i dont think this it will be a big problem. With a little practice and very small crop if needed will be fine. But do anyone knows or saw a 4/3 VF ?

Michael.

There are two custom settings on the dial. Full wide is 35mm, set the zoom to 50 on one C setting and your choice for C2. When you turn the camera on and to c, the lens will automatically set to repeat the programed focal length.

In the end I got a Nikon D200.

I use a Contax turret finder on a Ricoh GX 100. It has the advantage of being able to set the zoom at 24,28,35,50 and 72 focal lengths and the picture format to 3:2 so the finder works fine and is a vast improvement over the EVF and the optical finder in my wifes Canon A700.

The external vf will only help with composition and not focusing.

autofocus...;)

interesting idea... let us know if you did it. i was looking at the g9 but the viewfinder is just awkward. why do all these cameradesigners forget every progress in cameradesign (viewfinder dev. from leica I to the M3, after that display of necessary information etc..) from the last 70 years. so history is not evolving... hegel wasn't right?

cheers m.
