G9 vs. XTi

I am thinking of getting a Canon G9 for a digital camera. I have the Canon XTi but I would really ike something smaller and more like a rangefinder camera. (I am not interested in the M8 at this time) Does anyone have experience with both? Could you please share your pros and cons? Is the chip in the G9 significanatly smaller than the XTi? I will be using the camera primarily for images publlished in a newpaper format, so enlargements are not too much of an issue. Thanks for your help.

I have a new G9, but no XTi. I can tell you that I am totally in love with the little G9. It is quite an amazing camera. It has replaced all of my film cameras, Epson R-D1s, and Nikon D200 as my all 'round shooter. It doesn't have the best absolute image quality but it is the most versatile, light weight and fun to use camera ever.

appropriated this image from Wikipedia. The XTi has the Canon APS-C sensor, and the G9 has the 1/1.7" which is right below the Canon APS-C sensor in the image below. Size wise the G9 seems to be about 1/8 of the XTi sensor with MORE MP... yikes. But the images that my friend takes with his G9 do come out OK if you shrink them down and don't use them to print large images.

I have a G9 (and a 5D), and my girlfriend has the XTi. The G9 is capable of very good images and, of course, is more compact. It also has a video function, which is something I really appreciate, and excellent macro ability. Disadvantages vs. the XTi are noise (which becomes fairly noticable at 400) and a very deep depth of field because of the small sensor, which makes it hard to isolate your subject.
