Gallery Thoughts

sorry for this rant, but I truly do appreciate what Jorge and Joe are doing here.. I'd like to see them continue to provide this site.. sometimes features don't work out as well as they were intended, but personal attacks or 'suggestions' that the providers increase their efforts in order to please individuals is uncalled for
My feelings exactly. Very well stated.

Richard

I have to say Jorge posted one my pictures yesterday as the featured photo. To my embarassment it was a photo I'd posted in a thread clearly stating I'd shot it on a Pentax67 but I hadn't labelled as such in the gallery. As soon as I saw it (within hours of it going up) I pm'd Jorge to tell him and he took it down -quite rightly IMO. I didn't for one minute think it was good enough for a featured photo (bad scan small file) so I didn't really worry that I hadn't labelled it. But rest assured I will label any non rf photos as such in the future.

Whilst "personal attacks" are not appropriate for RFF, I think suggestions to resolve issues are a reasonable approach.

As I recall the broad run of these series of discussions was to do with "censorship" and the inclusion, deletion, and accepabilty of certain pictures. e.g. "the protest rally", "the dog on the hook", and the "DSLR shot as featured RFF pic".

Generally, most of us would say we value "freedom" to say and think according to our conscience, and the right of comment and reply is essential to our free society.

Roman certainly thought so, and voted with his feet. Others were in sympathy.

It is an undeniable truth that if we want the freedom to post pics and comment according to those precepts we hold dear, - then we have to allow the same rights to others whose opinions we despise.

I thought the protest rally pics were OK, and I despised the dog on the hook pic. I thought the DSLR Pic was relatively inconsequential. I think this is "fair comment" on my part and I'm prepared to stand by it.

Whilst it's one thing to say, if you don't like it don't look, it's a different matter to say, I don't like it so don't display it.

In conclusion, I have supported Jorge in this and earlier threads, and continue to do so, but I think it's also OK to have an opinion, and probably still OK to say what it is.

with all due respect, people.. it might behoove you all to think about the monthly fee Jorge is charging you.. or rather, isn't.. this is a service he's providing at no cost.. yet he pays a monthly fee to keep this site running.-

Intentionally I haven't said anything yet related to this ugly DSLR pic, it's too ridiculous for me to get excited about.

But with all due to respect, Joe , but don't tell anybody please what might behoove to him !
I have observed already that sometimes you tend a bit to mix things up.
At this point you sound like trying to tell us that we better shut up as long as we don't pay or in other words that you consider it as indecent behaviour to critizise ANYTHING here as long as this is a free service.

Strange enuff if this is YOUR understanding of "decent behaviour" but don't call all those who dare to critizise the list owner's decisions a bunch of ungrateful naughty lots !
😡

I understand your viewpoint, Bertram.. it's not really the point I was trying to make, though.. to you, and everyone else, please understand that I wasn't suggesting that opinions and comments are a bad thing.. what I was actually saying was that it is inappropriate for any personal jabs toward others, whether they are administrators or regular members.. by all means share your thoughts, but do it in a respectful way.. if I ever say something on here to convey that "so and so is immature or a jerk" or whatever, definitely point it out to me so I can apologize

"It's Jorge's board ...but...I don't like this picture because it's digital...I don't like that picture because it has been digitally manipulated...I don't think non RF photos are appropriate....I don't like somebody telling me what's appropriate....I WANT MY FREEDON....I'M BEING CENSORED. WAAAAAAAAH! (Jorge's a nice guy but it's time somebody set him straight)."

This is getting vey old.

What I would like to see - and perhaps this has already been suggested, but I can't follow every thread, alas - is a footnote to EVERY photograph telling me which camera - and, in an ideal world, which film - was used to take it. It would be enlightening, and encouraging, and inspiring, just to KNOW....and yeah, it would probably make me covetous, too..🙂
It might also avert misunderstandings like this one.

Ha. Ha. You did miss this thread a few months ago! (It caused a valuable but contentious member to quit.) I agree with you, though.

It's a rock and hard place issue, I believe. I have always appreciated the Gallery and the folks who've posted pics there... but the RFF "homepage" is just swell promoting the discussions foremost. That there is a "featured photo" has never put me off, nor, I must say, inspired me: I always swing by the Gallery link on my visits for that!

I notice now that there is no featured pic... hmmm, I may not have always /liked/ the featured pic, but it did add something to the initial page. Maybe something akin to the random pulls as on the initial Gallery page... instead of the "Top News" stuff? Be a shame not to have some image-based link method to reach the Gallery from the RFF homepage.

rgds,
Dave

that was removed when it started to wreak havoc on the overall speed and reliability of the site.. however, the same feature shows up in the gallery now
