I have made many enhancements to the software which are running on my sites site but have been hesitant to install them here because of so many different views.

What is the overall consensus on the gallery ?

I think it's excellent. It took me a little while to get used to it but I now really like it.

What type of changes are you suggesting?

I know only this version, and appreciate its functionality/form very much. I don't notice on a brief skim of your sites what might be especially different about such enhancements, but it WAS a skim.

One thing I'm not fond of -
The intigration of the gallery to RFF. I'm not fond of clicking on "Home" or "Forum" and having a whole new window pop open. If I'm clicking on these two I want leave the Gallery and not have to close up windows.

Quite a few changes have a look at the attachments

You have

New profile page that is not tied to forum
New Like feature show who liked what
New hall of fame shows other hall of fame
Favorite lens browser
Film strip view
and more stuff

It seems like there was a lot of effort put into the lens database component but it's not often being used.
I wonder if going back to the old format of entering.......... Camera, lens, film, iso,... etc would be more well received and made better use of.
I much preferred it when entering info for those fields.
Attempting to choose from such a large drop down as it is now is clumsy.
Especially when one does not find what is desired to enter. ...Just a thought.
The rest looks great. Kudos!

One more big change was the ability t switch between regular thumbs and square. see attached,

Thought #1:
Instead of forcing the 400kb file size, why don't the server resize the file automatically? ImageMagick could do easily.

Of course, to prevent bandwidth hogs, still cap the upload up to let's say 1MB, which is a much more reasonable file size that most of us have lying around ready to upload.

Thought #2:
Please add Olympus 35 RC (and SP, RD) into the lens list. You already have the Trip in there.

I agree.

I'm not too familiar with the previous version the current method for selecting film/lens/camera is too clumsy.

Linking images from other servers

Linking images from other servers

Being able to link photos from Flickr and other "cloud-ish" type storage would be of huge benefit.
Since Flickr gave us all massive storage capacity I don't make little bitty web sized images anymore from my big RAW files and TIFF scans.
It's much simpler to just send the full size to flickr and my external HD at the same time.
Then when I need to link or send an image, I link smaller version using the re-sizing capability at flickr.
Going this way has saved a bit of HD space and more importantly made cataloging my library easier. One size fits all!
It may be to everyones benefit to hear 😉 .... I post very infrequently to the gallery now because it's a hassle to save an image in a super small profile specifically to use here.

What do you think?
There was once a time we could load images from a URL.
Can we get back to that again?

One thing that I do find annoying about the new gallery function is the inability to be able to enter lens details manually ... or have I missed something?

I was looking on the list for a 50mm f1.2 Zuiko and couldn't help but notice that there are very few OM lenses listed!

I agree with Keith. Most of my lenses are not on the list. And the ones that are listed are all lumped together in one long, long list. Like the film too. I gave up entering this information because it's just too much trouble. Aren't computers supposed to make entering information easy? I'm sorry, I just got a new Android phone and I'm getting spoiled.

I think the new Gallery has been a great improvement in so many ways. Further improvements? I would like to be able to go to a date in the gallery or 8 or 9 days instead of 7 or 14 days back: I have had too little time to make selections for the weekly Gallery Picks recently, but by mid week having to go to 14 days and page back is inconvenient. What about a Weekly Gallery Picks edit button which then ensures that the same set is scrolled through by everyone, and there would be less inclusion of photos from the previous week, already noticed in the previous week's Gallery picks. And the 50 Elmar M is not on the list of lenses.

I agree: the lens picking process in the gallery is a pita. And there are duplications as well as incorrect names.

Lens selection is inherently hierarchical, so a much better mechanism would be to pick lenses from cascade of categories: Make:FocalLength:Aperture:Model. Likewise for films: Maker:Type:Name.

Yes, computers are good at making it easier to choose the correct option. The database has to be constructed properly. Typing in the correct data and correct names can be tedious, but only the first time. What is truly tedious is correcting all the bad data from before!

I sent of lenses to one of the mods and they were added.

I'd agree with this. The old way of simply having a box in which to write the camera, lens, etc. was more comfortable to use.

This is a good idea... somehow locking the "Weekley Gallery Picks" into a defined subset of images from the previous Monday through Sunday, say, so that everyone looks through the same set.
