Perhaps this has been mentioned before, but why aren't we using Amazon Web Services or a Bingodisk from Joyent for storing images? Bingodisk, for example, gives you 100GB of storage for USD 199 per year.
I haven't taken the time to read through the seven pages of replies to the original post, but I don't see storage as a problem. Instead, we should improve the galleries tso that we could better explore the images that have been posted to RFF.

Movito,
Welcome to RFF. I see that this was your first posting here. $199 per year is not a small fee for amateur photography image storage.
I am deleting each day about twenty images from my gallery. This way, I should be OK by the deadline.

Those fees would be for the site, not individuals. $199 or whatever, spread across 25,000 members sharing 100GB is what Movito may have been referring to, using a web services based storage approach, which may not include a seamless interface to the phpBB system here.

OK. This makes sense. Thanks for the clarification.

Understood the need to preserve storage and the limit of the software. Still as a new member, I am still starting to look at all the photos in the gallery section. It will be a sad if any top rated, top commented and top viewed photos are gone. May be have to quickly mark and download as favorite then.

For members to selectively delete images to get down to the 60 MB limit (previous post a typo), you will have to do it one at a time, or perhaps you will be able to delete a gallery subfolder and all its contents, I am not sure.
Stephen
Wow! That's actually pretty generous - thanks!

I am getting down soon to that 60MB limit. It's not bad at all. Remove the photos that you don't like.

Double , triple even 4x posted pictures
Double , triple even 4x posted pictures
I posted some pictures over the weekend and realized that they appear twice in the gallery. I deleted one version of each them via edit / delete. Which is a pretty lenghty process. Is there an easier/faster way to delete pictures?
Looking at "last 7 days" I saw a lot of double posted pictures. Some even 3 or 4x. I guess it's a software glitch and I have no clue how difficult it'll be to fix it but obviously this bloats up the gallery and is wasting storage space - which was the starter for this thread....

If you upload the same photos to more than one category you've technically uploaded two photos according to the software. That's why I stopped posting in the other categories except occasionally in contests.I posted some pictures over the weekend and realized that they appear twice in the gallery. Hi Dave,
I only uploaded the pictures once and only choose one category. I guess when pictures appear as many times in the gallery as many catergories (same as "tags" ?) are picked than it should be an easy fix to stop this.... One picture gets shown only one time regardless how many categories - or am I completely misunderstanding something here

Storage Update
Storage Update
We need to look at this subject again because storage, or the lack of it, is becoming a problem. Rather than using a script to delete pics older than a certain date, I'm going to try a different approach and see how well it works for us in practice.
To get the most out of the our storage, I am reducing future uploads to the galleries, attachments, and classifieds from 300kb to 200kb, immediately saving up to 1/3 storage on future upload file space. On my own site 200 kb images take up most of the page and I don't see any reason for larger file size than that.
Member's gallery storage will be limited to 60mb per member for the time being. In most cases this far exceeds member usage. But some members will have to reduce their gallery images. I prefer members to choose which images are deleted, than an automated script to delete images. Members with over 60mb of storage will be emailed and given until December 1st to reduce their gallery size.
Next step, if need be, is deleting galleries if members have not been active in the last year.
Once these changes take place, we'll take a look at how well they work and see if further measures need to be taken. Of course these solutions will not please everyone, but we need to find the best solutions within the current storage capabilities. The way our site is set up, accessing storage from other locations is not practical.
Thanks to all.

Film is the other way
no worries Stephen, I got with your program when you announced the gallery issue over 4 months ago. I've deleted in excess of 80 percent of my galley. How's that for performance! Next step is deleting 100 percent. I don't really see any need for members to have a gallery here anyway. I use flickr and it works fine for images here at RFF. Something to think about.
Pretty much all along I've kept my gallery uploads to less than 150k each, but even so I'm now very close to the 60mb limit. I'll do some pruning to give more room for future uploads... But I have 1184 comments which I'd prefer not to lose!

Doug, be ruthless. I was. Yeah it hurt to delete the comments of friends but... "ya gotta do what ya gotta do!"
