I really enjoy getting a good deal. I admit that sometimes I'll even buy something I don't need, if it's a good deal. Today I got a good deal, and it was exactly what I needed.

Over the past while, I have been using up some bulk rolled TMax 400 B+W film that I got partly in a deal selling a Jobo processor. Included were 2 bulk rolls of more TMax 400. I was in the need of a bulk loader to load some rolls so I could keep shooting.

Running errands today (Saturday) I pulled into a garage sale, as I am wont to do. (I always wanted to use that word. :)) I usually come up dry, but this time there was a large box with photo stuff. I liked what I saw without digging and examining everything, and found the seller. Finding something of interest (photo stuff) at a garage sale is exciting because it happens rarely, so I was in a heightened state of awareness.

"Are you interested in the photo stuff?" she asked.
"Why yes, yes I am," I replied. "How much for the whole box?"
"What do you think?" she asked.
"How about $20?"
"That's what I was thinking," she said.

Here is the booty:

3 bulk rolls of HP5+ (30M, 30M, 17M)
14 rolls of FP4+, 36exp
4 rolls APX400
maybe 50 bulk roll film cassettes, metal with snap lids, unused
a new Watson bulk film roller in its box
2 Patterson film developing tanks with reels
a Petri f1.9 fixed lens RF camera in its original box, shutter speeds good, very good cosmetic condition, but RF patch is weak, still usable

It's not a crazy, over-the-top buy, like a Nikon S kit for $20, but it was just what I needed (except for the camera) and it made my day. Just wanted to share. Feel free to add your own garage/lawn/boot/estate sale buys.
 
Good score!

It's been quite a while since I've found a bargain anything like that. My best find was the Schneider-Kreuznach Tele-Xenar 360/5.5 and a Pentax-F 28/2.5 together for $50.

The feeling of a bargain on something you will use is certainly great.
Did you ask how old was the film and in what conditions it was stored? (was it in the "garage" before the "sale"?)
also, if I where you, I would carefully clean the canisters felts/light traps before using them, unless you are in the "I love long thin bright horizontal lines in my pictures" trip ;) (ask me how I know that one :eek:)
 
The seller indicated that the film was not too old, but it will be a gamble. The cassettes were all in individual plastic film cannisters and look new, but thanks for the warning. This belonged to a student who just finished a fine arts degree.
 
The Nikon M with 5cm F1.4 was $30 at the antique store.

The Leica III with Elmar and Leica IIIa with Summar were the $15 cameras...
 
Dont knock the Petri, particularly the f1.9 one. Been lusting after one for years, had a 2.8 and a 1.9 back in the 60's. Used to take the Petri on field exercises rather than my M2. The lens was superb.

I had an f2.8 version a while ago, and got very good results at a motorcycle meet in Port Dover, one Friday the 13th.

I need to hit the yard/garage sales. My last big haul wasn't at a garage sale but a near complete darkroom setup on freecycle, Durst M302 with Nikon 50/4 lens, trays, time o lite, papre, etc. My Spotmatic also came from a yard sale, given to me by my stepson.
 
Greg, I will! One of the APX 400 rolls that came in the box.
This camera feels much more robust than the Olympus SP which is the closest comparable camera I've got to the Petri.
 
I found the Miranda at a local flea market today. Got the camera with case, lens, and a Miranda flash for $10

Did a meter test with a zinc-air 675 in a gutted 625 cell and found the meter to be accurate.

Best I found was a Spotmatic II with 24mm f/3.5 SMC Takumar for $10. I wish I'd kept it but I sold it on eBay for a lot more.
 
I commissioned for a seller a very rare late 1942 Leica IIIC Grey (normal bearing) red curtain camera that was found in NC. for $12!!!!!!!!! at a junk shop, camera was all matching numbers, original case and lens, with a very rare lens cap ~ ex++ condition ~ we sold it to Italy for nearly $3,000

I also knew a guy who found a Dial Set Compur Leica at a garage sale back in 1992 for like $10.

and a friend in Miami found a Leica M3 for $5 at a thrift store.....

I never find stuff that cheap, I end up paying at least a few hundred for anything truly rare.

Best deals I've had in a long time, were an verified original LTM 1943 CZJ Sonnar f1/5/50 for under $150 and a verified original IIIC K Chrome for under $500

I found an M3 with 50 summarit in original case for $15.00.I got Youxin to do a CLA.I've been shooting it daily.I love my camera.:D


Recently found an original hood.I'm a happy man.....
 
Yesterday I was searching craigslist for local garage sales and "Nikon"...a few popped up but one listed an "old school Nikon F camera"...it would have been a 45 mile round trip just to get to the sale so I decided not to go...but then my daughter needed to go out that way this morning so I look up the address again and stopped to see if it was still there and what he wanted for it...
I got there and he still had it...I went straight for it, picked it up and said "How much?"...
"Ten bucks..."
I found a $10 bill handed it to him and headed to my car...
It was dirty & dusty but complete with the original F prism...
After doing some checking it's a 1962 model and it has the F Photomic finder with the Flag Up switch for the meter...
S.#64650XX for the body and S.#8859XX for the finder...
It's in pretty decent shape for it's age (49 years old)...it also has it's dings , missing paint and a few rub marks but everything works...the meter responds to light but there's no way I would trust it...it sticks but it works...
Shutter curtains are in great shape along with the pressure plate...
Leatherette is nice and complete, black paint on the body is 95% complete with just a few minor rub marks but some of the paint on the finder is flaking off...
I replaced the mirror and finder foam and the shutter sounds real nice, much quieter than the F2...
Now I have the F, F2, F4 & F5...the F3 continues to be missing in my life and I really don't think I'll ever own the F6...
