Gear Acquisition Syndrome ....GAS

Resist it. Do not succumb. See GAS for what it really is. An embarrassing debilitating illness which have its sufferers buying all sorts of stuff they think they need only followed by some degree of buyer's remorse.

I am glad I found this site. When I read about GAS and then found out what it was I was actually releived. I think I now may be able to fight it.

A couple of years ago I just had to have a Mamiya RZ kit. I rationalized that I could get the kit for less than one overpriced lens for my Rollei 6008I which I happily used for years. I kept buying more stuff for the RZ. I had already acquired some Nikon cameras, and a couple of funky cheap Medium Format cameras years ago.

I then got an EOS 3, because it was cheap, and it would compliment my Canon dSLR nicely. Hmmm, how often have I used it? Maybe two rolls of film in a year. GAS +ebayitis, a dangerous combination.

Hasselblad cameras started coming down in price...of course I had to have one, since I've always wanted one. Actually, I passed on the Hassy in the late '90s when I bought the Rollei. I then read about old folding 120 RF cameras. I looked at them for weeks and then finally gave in...after a few rolls of film, it sits here on a table beside me, with its old musty smelling case, and funny frame spacing, unused...dare I say unloved?

I then talked myself into a 35mm rangefinder...they're quick, they use small fast, nice lenses. Ordered one a day or two before a trip to Europe. As I packed for the trip, hastily stuffed it in my camera bag and kept packing. My initial impression, "sure is pretty", and "I didn't realize film takes up so much space". I groaned each of the numerous times my bag passed under xray machines. I used my dSLR mostly and then got up the courage to pull out the RF after a few days. "How much did that cost" wife says. Oh, "not much".... sure cheaper than a really fast, Canon lens, (but not exactly cheap). "Look how small it is, I can carry it ALL DAY without neck pain , unlike my dSLR". Besides it was my father's day gift to myself, and I had just bought her a shiny new dSLR with a Canon L lens, "give me a break", I thought.

Well, as the credit card bills come in and we see the results of the plunging weak US dollar to GBP and EURO and two weeks of being "over there", with buying food, transportation costs (planes, trains, taxis, tours), hotels, etc... the only comment I hear is " who's Stephen Gandy", and I thought you said it didn't cost much". 🙄
