Oh wow, I don't believe I did this one. I always thought I was immune to the condition known as GAS.

Well, to make a long story long -- last week for some reason I don't really know I was looking around on That Auction Site and I noticed that there was this good looking and good sounding BLACK QL17 GIII that didn't have an inflated price. The ones I've seen lately usually have a bid around $200 and BIN at $250 or so.

So anyway, I said "what the {heck}" and I put a bid in and believe it or not I got it!

It went for just under my max bid, too close for comfort, actually, and it skyrocketed to that value the last few minutes.

So anyway, I now hold in my hand (well, kinda, not as I type) a nice clean shiny black GIII. 🙂 It looks really sharp! One touch I like is that it has a nice chrome plug for the RF adjustment hole in the back. My other one had a grey plastic one which fell out, and now has a little black rubber one. The shutter works and sounds more or less accurate, lens is free of fungus, and the light seals are fair to so-so. I guess I should replace them if Jon will sell me another kit (see below). 🙂

I thought it might have a problem, but I think all it really needs is some exercise. As I was giving it a sanity check, I noticed that the "feature" that locks the shutter when it's underexposed did not work, and at first no matter what the meter read, it would stop down to about f16 when I pre-pressed the button. After several repetitions, it started working more or less normally. 🙂

But anyway, I know I say that I don't think of a camera as a fashion accessory, but I do like the looks of this one. 🙂 I also liked the looks of the black Pentax I had many years ago.

One thing I did notice, when I won the thing and looked at the bid history, I did recognize one very familiar name in there -- Interslice -- Sorry, Jon. 🙂 🙂

Congratulations,. There is something "special" about the black ones. I jknow they operate tthe same and all that but they are still very different.

Congratulations! You know, I think the smaller fixed RFs look even better in black than the "big boys". I don't know why, though. I remember the first time I saw a Trip 35 on eGas, and I was bowled over. It looked like a million bucks!

Thanks, Kim.

Hey, maybe you can tell me this one quickly. The rangefinder calibration is off, and I seem to remember a trick where you could remove part of the flash shoe to get to the adjustment without taking the whole cover off. I can't seem to remember it or figure it out.

Thanks. 🙂

Hi,
The GIII repair manual is here with diagrams. http://pentax-manuals.com/repairs.htm 😉

Flip the front of the hotshoe cover up and it will slide off backwards. One adjustmet here. The other is behind the cover just to the left of the film wind flag. Use a bung or pencil eraser as a friction tool to take it off.

Nobody who surfs ebay can claim to be free of GAS!

I really don't do it very often, I swear ... really ... I mean I ... 🙂

Now, let's see some pictures of it!

Ok, let me see if I have an unfinished roll in another camera and I'll shoot it tonite. If I think of it when I adjust the rangefinder and do a test roll, I'll do the stereotypical self portrait with it in the mirror too.

I don't know if I will attempt to {modify} this one too by re-calibrating it to take 1600 film or not. (I had originally typed "b*st*rd*ze, but the system bleeped it out. That word seems rather tame here in the 21st. century.)

Congrat's! I kinda knew from an earlier post of yours that this would come about... 🙂 One of the few cameras I don't scoff at when I see the description 'black beauty'. They really look amazing! I may chase one down some day, but my silver GIII is in need of use as it is. I've also got the fsu bug at the moment & need to stop collecting. Hopefully I just won what will cure me... a KNeB!

Do post a picture & make us all jealous!!!

Gonna answer 2 in 1 here. 🙂

Thanks, that looks like a good complete one. Somebody sent me parts of this back in 2005 in the form of .tif files, but this looks like the original. 🙂

That was easy. 🙂 I'm using a porch light on a house about a block away as an infinity reference. I'll double check it tomorrow when it's bright and I have something farther away to test it on.

LOL, you knew? 🙂 Yes, I've been kinda eyeing these for a while, but this is the first one that didn't go for what seemed to be an obscene price. I'm still surprised I got it.

Now to run a test roll this weekend, and if it's fine I'm gonna try it out for real when I go out to the Left Coast over the holidays. 🙂
