George Lowe, RIP

Thanks for posting this, Adrian. I didn't know he used a Retina on that famous occasion. I will keep an eye out for the book too.

Cheers,

Alex

My pleasure Alex, at least as far as reporting someone's death can be pleasurable.

I didn't realise he used a Retina either, I assume that it was a logical choice for an expedition of that type owing to the camera's small size. I knew about Hillary's second-hand Retina, I wonder how much note-comparing they did?

It was nice to see the picture of him changing films - when I spotted the obit I'd just got back from the Lake District where I put the first film through my newly Chris Sherwood-ed Retina II myself. George's results were better...

The new book of Lowe's photographs was mentioned in yesterday's Sunday Times. The photographs in the paper's magazine are stunning.

Info on the book from the publisher's website is here - http://www.thamesandhudson.com/The_Conquest_of_Everest/9780500544235

If you have yesterday's Sunday Times, or are a subscriber (there's a paywall), you can get the book for £20.

My copy arrived three days ago. The only thing that has stopped me reading it cover to cover is that I am trying to savour it!

Well worth the investment, some nice camera porn too, and a wonderful list of instructions for getting the best out of your cameras on a mountain!

Thanks for the update, Adrian. I haven't ordered my copy yet, but your post is a powerful reminder to do so.
