I posted this answer for the german members or members who are temporary in germany here.
Perhaps it is possible to take some coffee together one day
Between Hannover and Hamburg and a little west and east...

I am from New Jersey, my mother was born in Rochester, Kodak Rochester, and her folks were both born in Berlin. She and her two sisters were bi-lingual German-English, my grandparents spoke German of course and had accents to their dying day. All the grandchildren, myself included, learned German. On my father's side his mom was half German and spoke German.

We have close ties with our Berlin family and have had them visit. So while I am very proud to be native born and to have done my Army time I take great pleasure in my German roots. And don't we all know that good recipes all start with, "First saute onions in bacon fat." Ehrenwort ;o)

I was born in Austria (Ösiland).
We Austrians are surrounded by about four different languages.
(If you don't take into account the many dialects in Austria.)
My ancestors are from Austria, Germany and France - as far as we know ;-)
I speak German and English with a few words French and Italian.
So what am I now?
🤣

Cooooool picture! I guess they were totally pissed with that Beck's beer...

Cooooool picture! I guess they were totally pissed with that Beck's beer...

Beck's is bl**dy (sorry, I'm an adopted Aussie) good, no, great! beer. In the 1980s when I was young and my delusions outweighed the realities of the sad world we now live in, I discovered a brewery in West Java that made a good imitation of that original German brew. I was in Semarang (Central Java) at the time for an extended romance that ultimately led to nothing but was great fun while it lasted. And had a lot of free time on my hands while then SO went to work and I was left on my own to wander around and look at things. And discovered the legendary Toko Oen cafe (which is still there, I revisited it in May this year) in that city. And drank enough Beck's to keep them in profit for at least a quarter year. It took me two times that (= six months) to lose the bloat all that brew put in my gut, but I do have to say I loved it.

Sadly Toko Oen no longer has Beck's on their menu. They did offer Bintang and Heineken and I had a bottle of each for old times' sake. I will now Google Beck's Indonesia to see if that brewery still produces the goods, if it does then a visit to West Java may well be on the cards for me. To look at volcanoes and old Dutch buildings...

My only downside sort of complaint with modern day Germany is your wines are much too sweet, and you suck insofar as vegetarian-vegan eateries go. Or haven't I been looking in the right places...

Otherwise you are a fine culture with much to recommend it. Leica for a starter. Contax for another. And Rolleiflex, well, don't get me going on that, I'm a Rollei aficionado!

All this meant only in fun, to say welcome to this thread. Now please get busy and post some good images for us to feed off.
