Modifying your M3 is fairly simple job. Mine follows just shy of 0,7m (about 0.75m). With my tabbed black Summicron it is a perfect combo. Getting an M2 to use with a 50mm while you have an M3 doesn't really make a lot of sense to me.
Zeiss 50/2 -> 0,7m really a great lens but maybe too sharp for portraits...
If you're into serious portraiture you could evaluate the 75mm summilux: 0,7m MFD (II version only) and is a great lens for close-ups, details and portraits. Costly, though...
Roland, one day I'm gonna buy 75 lux, maybe this year, maybe next life. As for SLRs I'm considering to wake up my Contax 139Q with a Planar 50/1.4, or maybe 50/1.7, they say its sharper wide open...
Did you considered the Elmar-M 50 2.8 (version 2) ? I had the same problem as you with a Heliar 2.0 that only focused to 1 meter.
If you don't already know this lens you can have more details in kenrockwell and photo examples in flickrhivemind. []'s
