I know better. German camera manufacturers have always befuddled me with all the variations they can come up with in equipment. But I'm still fascinated by it all. So it was not at all surprising when I discovered my latest addition to the Leica-R line has a couple of little build issues that unless one has really researched, you'd never know about them.

First, if you want a motor drive or winder for your R7, and want to add a grip, you need to make sure to get the one specifically for the 7, as it's a bit taller than the rest of the R SLRs. Okay, no problem, the seller pointed that out in his description so I did get the right one. It helped that he showed a photo showing the raised lettering on the inside of the grip designating it as R7.

But the other thing is, if you wish to use the shutter release button on top of the R7 grip, you need to get a motor/winder with the three contacts on front that power that button. That's what I overlooked, so now if I want to use the grip, I have to reach with my left hand across the front of the camera under the lens to hit the release button on the drive/winder that is there for when you hold the camera in a portrait position.

I think I need to get that copy of the Leica-R Compendium I've seen on eBay, or I'm going to wind up with a bunch of extra Leica-R gear.
