GF1 and M adapter question

Forgive me if this has been answered in another thread but I couldn't find it. I'm looking to buy the M adapter so that I can use my Leica glass on my GF1. My question is does the magnified view come up when focusing the legacy lenses?

I have an E-P1 and can toggle the magnified view manually when using adapted M/LTM lenses should be similar on a GF-1.

what adapter are you using?

i have an 4/3 oly macro lens with the panasonic adapter for my g1 and it shows the magnified view.

my 20 dollar m adapter works ok and fits great but does not show the magnified view with my m lenses.

Generic M>m4/3...if I understood the OP correctly, "magnified view" = image enlargement for manual focus on the LCD? My apologies, if I'm off track.....
 
The M adapters do not have electrical contacts to tell the body that the lens focus ring was turned, and thus unlike the new Nokton 25mm f/0.95, the magnified view won't come up automatically when you focus. They would need to put some kind of pressure sensor in the rangefinder coupling cam, plus a CPU and electronics to do otherwise, and that would make the adapter prohibitively expensive.

btw, it's still very easy to focus the 50 on the g1 and get sharp results.
 
the OP asked a very straight forward question.. not sure what the confusion is.

A legacy lens on the GF1 won't automatically activate the MF assist magnified view when you rotate the focus barrel. However, the GF1 recognizes that a legacy lens is mounted, and it automatically goes into a mode where you can activate the MF assist view by pressing-in the rear dial. Another press of the rear dial or half press of the shutter takes you out of the MF assist view.
 
Thank you for the replies! Nice to know that you can manually activate the MF assist on the GF1. Hmm... manually activate manual mode.

Hi! Yes, since lots of members put their photography equipment in their signature I figure I'll put my "other" equipment there. Only string players would know what the heck is listed!

The gf1 does not automatically recognize that you are shooting with an adapter .
In the custom settings menu (3rd down) set the item "shoot without lens" to <on>.
Then you can activate magnification by pressing the wheel.
Don't forget to set this item to <off> when shooting with an autofocus lens.

I may be missing something, but is there any disadvantage to setting "shoot without lens" <on> all the time? I never turn it off when switching to AF lenses, never noticed any difference.

Very fine instruments and bows! This is the first time I ever encountered another violinist in a hobby that's why I was quite surprised.

Once that mode is activated, IT DOES recognize you are shooting with a legacy lens. Well actually, it's probably more like that it recognizes there is no lens installed. Hence why the rear dial now activates the MF assist when you push on it.

There is no need to turn off the "shoot without lens" function when using autofocus lenses.

Distance markings on M4/3 to M adapter using M lens

Hi,

A friend of mine lent me his M4/3 to M adapter to put on my GF1. This weekend I was shooting with my Voigtlander 21mm f4 color skopar lens and I noticed the distance markings were useless.
1. When the lens is turned to infinity, it's not sharp. If i put the lens on 5M, it's infinity.
2. When I put the lens on 1M distance, in reality my subject is more like 1.30.
3. When i shoot someone at 5M distance, the lens marking is on 1.5M.

I can focus manually on the screen but why are the distance markings not working? Can anyone verify this is even supposed to work?

It's typical of $15-40 generic M or LTM>m4/3 adapters to focus beyond infinity. I've had a similar experience with the same lens so I shimmed my cheap adapter to make the distance scale useful. Otherwise, invest on a high quality unit like a Voigtlander.

The 'official' ones cost £150 at my local store for a peice of dumb metal. Is this really the only way to make lens markings work?

This would be a shame :( (sobs)

Accuracy doesn't come cheap, it takes time to calibrate the adapter flange to exact thickness all around. In the early days of m4/3 a lot of cheap adapters would not focus to infinity, so I guess the Chinese manufacturers decided to go a bit over infinity to make them usable perhaps thinking that the LCD or EVF on a m4/3 body will show proper focus.

FWIW, there are wax paper and metal shims under the lens flange of my '32 Leica II. I took note of their exact location while restoring it. And that's where I got the idea to "fix" my cheap M>m4/3 adapter.

You Get What You Pay For

As has already been said, accuracy and consistency doesn't come cheap.

You can live with the situation, you can shim the adapter, you can (maybe) return it and keep trying until you get one that's better, or you can buy a better, more-expensive adapter.

I have about a dozen adapters, all but one is cheap. I focus on the screen or EVF and don't worry about marked infinity...
