As a longtime rangefinder user, I have been using the Panasonic GF1 for a few years. It's the first digital camera that I like and is useable to me. However, it is LOUD, especially in comparison to Leicas. It is a bit of a problem if you try to make stealthy shots.
Does anyone know if the Micro 4/3 cameras are as loud? (Like Olympus or later GF bodies.)
Thanks!

I don't think it is -- there is a shutter in the body.

My M6 is definitely quieter -- especially at slower shutter speeds.
I just found a similar thread on another forum:

It's just part of that type of shutter.

... my daughters makes a faint snik higher pitched than the klump of a M2 but around the same volume ... it would have to be a really quiet opera for either to be a problem

But why is there even a shutter? I don't really understand why it isn't more like a cell-phone camera, constantly live until you capture the image.

My GF1 which I have been using since it first came on the market is quieter than my M8u and only slightly noisier than my M4P. In other words, very very quiet.

Emm...no, the noise from a Lumix GF1 is not artificial: it has an actual curtain shutter.
People perceive it to be "loud" given the size of it, and...usually people don't expect a real curtain shutter in such a little thing, which makes it seem louder than it actually is.
The sound is actually less obtrusive than, say, a Canon 5D, but definitely much louder than a Fuji Finepix point-and-shoot with the sound turned off.
