Hello, G2 newbie here, fresh from the world of Pentax 67! Seems strange to be able to handhold a camera...!

Just bought a G2 kit and running a few films through it. Have a B+W yellow screw-in filter fitted to lens, and a Contax GG1 wide angle metal hood. Problem is that the hood vignettes the corner of the viewfinder. Seems strange, as I would have thought it wasn't exactly unusual that someone would use a screw filter and this hood together. Any suggestions on how to work round this gratefully received!

Thanks.

Gee, I am surprised that you have the vignetting problem. I use the Contax UV/haze filter with the hood and have no problem. Maybe the B+W filter is that much thicker that it would cause a problem? See if one of the Hoyas is a little thinner -- or see if there's a yellow Contax G filter.

B&W and Tiffen make a line of filters that have thinner mounts for wide angle lenses. Specify that the next time you buy.

guys.. I think he's complaining about the metal hood blocking his view in the viewfinder, not vignetting on the film... at least, that's the way I read it. A thinner filter ain't gonna help out. It's one of the "drawbacks" to rangefinder system is that various lenses can actually block your field of view.

It sort of bothered me on the first few rolls, but I became accustomed to it quickly.

Um, don't think my initial post was really that clear!

Jano is right, problem is the vignetting in the viewfinder. I suppose that as this only affects the viewfinder but not the actual exposure I just have to get used to it, right?

Corrrrect. That's one of the joys of rangefinder photography and you get used to it pretty soon.

Yah, it helps to learn to keep your other eye open.. assuming you bring your right-eye to the viewfinder. This is kinda weird at first, too, took me months to get used to it. I get a sense of composition using my left eye, then squint to focus with the right. :)

It will all depend upon which lense/rangefinder combo you chose, there will be some that won't vignette at all, and some that block up a pretty good amount.

I've seen hoods that have "vents" in them that you can "look" through, so it helps out a bit. None for the G, though.
