Depends on how you count them. Generally, there were single-coated lenses (sometimes mistakenly believed to be uncoated) and multi-coated lenses.
I know the F. Zuikos generally are single-coated lenses but I've also read there are at least a relative few that were multi-coated.
Those designated with Zuiko (rather than F.Zuiko) are multi-coated as are those with the MC designation.
The last group of multi-coated lenses dropped the MC designation but bore the legend on the front "made in Japan." The serial number on these lenses is not on the front of the lens, as it had been with previous versions, but was engraved on the bottom side of the chrome lens mount.
Many folks believe the last group of lenses were the best in terms of contrast, sharpness, etc., particularly those with serial numbers in excess of 1.1 million.
Dan, you're thinking of the 50/1.4. The 50/1.8 went through a number of different iterations, and the last "Made in Japan" version is considered to be the best.
