Make a spreadsheet. Sometimes going through plastic lenses every 9 months is cheaper.

Also, consider that scratches, when viewed through glasses held up to a viewfinder, don't get hit with direct light and thus don't really interfere with your finder all that much. So a possibility is: have shooting glasses, that might get beat up, and regular glasses, for general wear.

An extra feature of the shooting glasses, if you wear bifocals, is that they can be just single-vision.

At 72 my cataracts have gotten bad enough that they now want to cut open my eyes and squirt lenses into them. So, possibly no more glasses, except for readers. I’m nervous about it but if I go ahead it will be the distance lenses. Hopefully I’ll be able to go to a dark location and see the stars again.

Don't be nervous about cataract surgery. I'm 78 and had in done last year. No more glasses, except for reading. Your ophthalmologist will do one eye two weeks apart. I experienced no pain, the only pain is putting the drops in your eyes before and after. Do it.

This may be off-topic a bit -- but does anyone notice that their prescription lenses tend to have some "barrel distortion?" I just got a new set and it's like I want to plug in +3 to my Photoshop tool to correct them. 🙂.

Yes, I have noticed the barrel distortion. One place where I especially notice it is in stairwells, where I can see that the handrail appears curved, when it really isn't. Other than that, I'm seldom aware of it.
