glued adapter?

I bought a Nikkor 35/1.8 in LTM from eBay. It arrived this AM, with an LTM to M adapter attached. Could not unscrew the thing for the life of me. Applied some WD-40 to the adapter using a precision oiler, nothing doing, still stuck. Finally cut the damn thing off with a dremel tool (with minor damage to a small section of the threads) only to find a thin patchy layer of something that looked like glue on the bottom of the lens. Scraped off the debris with a razor, and polished it with Flitz to remove the last of the residue.

So, do people use cyanoacrylate to attach adapters to LTM lenses? That's what the glue looked like, much harder than thread lock compound or clear nail polish 😕

Congratulations on such a rare lens. I had no diea that such a lens existed in LTM/M.

Raid, this is the second one of these that I have owned. I foolishly sold the first one to an RFFer about a year ago. Decided that I wanted another one- think that I will hold onto this one.

These lenses are hard to find, but it looks like I got a good one- the glass is very clean and bright. I think that Cameraquest site states that only about 1700 were made in LTM

Well, then you better hold on to such a rare lens. I may have had such a lens once in S mount as a loaner, and I did not even realize its value until a year later. The Nikkor 50/1.1 loaner was more obviously a rare lens.

The 35/1.8 is great and rare in LTM.

I have a Summarit with an M adapter that I can't remove. Maybe it's glued too. I have never heard of anyone gluing an adapter. I have come across quite a few items with driver's licenses and social security numbers engraved, however. What kind of madness drives people to do such a thing?

Try doing camera repair for a while. You won't believe some of the things people do to their cameras (shutter blades sprayed with WD-40; cyanoacrylate inside cameras that are then shut so the fingerprints all get fumed; acetone used to clean plastic parts; fresnels lenses "cleaned" with alcohol; parts that are supposed to be removable epoxied into place; grub screws replaced with bolts -- that then have their heads ground off; Rick Oleson says someone even tried to bake the enamel on a camera in a microwave -- and yeah, lots and lots of social security numbers clawed into the chrome).

Rubbing alcohol etches the type of plastic many fresnel lenses are made of. Just CLAd a Yashica D with alcohol marks on the fresnel focusing screen. I did what I could with it and it works now, but it would be a lot easier to focus if he hadn't done that. The top of the focusing screen had a big fingerprint etched into the plastic where he had alcohol on this fingers. I polished that out. The back of the focusing screen had lots of opaque smears. Rubbed those with cotton balls dipped in distilled water until I had polished the frosted white parts clear.
