Just saw this article in PetaPixel: the new GPixel GMAX3005 (click here for press release and tech specs) scientific bw sensor:

Sensor size: 167.6 x 30.1mm (sensitive area 165mm × 27.5mm)
Sensor Type: CMOS
Pixel dimensions: 30,000 x 5,000
Output: bw
Frame rate: 10fps
Designed for high DR and long exposures without need for cooling

Can you imagine how insane this would be in an Xpan?

Anyone fancy a Kickstarter project?

Very nice, but:

a) it does NOT fit into XPan, XPan is just small 24x65mm frame
b) XPan is one of those overpriced and overhyped cameras that's probably impossible to licence for i.e. Kickstarter project
c) it'd be an utter waste to use just a tiny fraction of this sensor in the limited XPan 😀

On more realistic side: a medium format flat plane panoramic, such as a proper Fuji 617 or Linhof 617 would be a vastly better choice than any XPan as a carrier of this sensor to use it's full width & full lenght.

Personally I'd love they'd make similar sensor it circular plane and little wider per it's lenght for more sensor surface giving improved tonal rendering and build i.e. high-end Noblex 150/175-ish type swivel lens camera for it with a capable shift-functioned lens - now that would be an ultimate panoramic camera for those creative artistic shots! IMHO it'd not only make a more compact and more capable camera, but a better quality in IQ deparment as well without the degraded corner effects of the flat-plane panoramic cameras suffer from.

JMHO of course,
Margus
