According to the guide in the helicopter tour, the beaches where the turtles come in were all well away from where I was staying or had access to. It would have been nice to see a couple of sea turtles, but the opportunity didn't present itself.
I'm back home. A lovely trip, for sure. Some downs ...
The X2, nice as it is, was really not the best choice for this trip. My Olympus E-M1 would have been ideal, fitted with either the Summilux 25/1.4 or a the Olympus ZD 35/4 Macro, or even the Olympus ZD 11-22/2.8-3.5 ED zoom lens. But the X2 worked just fine anyway, for what it was useful for.
The ruins of Lahaina really got to me. I have fond memories of bringing my mom there, my partner on another trip. It's pretty much just gone now, the area is a cluttered mess of construction equipment and political battles over what to build now. A row of crosses with lei's in memorial to the couple of hundred who didn't make it out and perished literally made me cry.
I had wanted to drive to Hana but, wow, it is really really a difficult place to get to. Several hours driving time, each way .. Not worth it. I picked a helicopter tour that included it instead, which was great.
Minor downs. The trip was delightful overall, easy and zero stress. My hotel accommodations were about 50 feet from the beach, and the people I met and chatted with were all great to spend a little time with, talk with. I took a few photos, some might be worth posting. The folks in the cafe I frequented for breakfast, the other cafe I found for my afternoon cup, were all bright, young folks who worked hard and smiled a lot while doing so. I appreciated every one of them. 🙂
