Last year I never had a holiday, because due to my heart suddenly needing a CLA - I almost went to that 'lightroom' in the sky!. You can imagine how pleased I am to be going to Turkey next week, that is - if our Icelandic friends don't send more airborne ash over here!. Well, I've started packing and here is the 'unique' but boring bit!, because I am not going to list every piece of my gear, and invite many pages of well-meaning advice on what I should take, even though it is customary - and you guys relish such opportunities! ;).
Your preferences re. focal lengths, bodies, film amounts and type, make fascinating reading (sometimes!) but would probably not equate to my vacation activities. I like to travel light, so at the risk of boring you further - here is what will be in my small 'Billingham' - the Nikon D40 with kit zoom ( sorry! ) for the colour stuff (mainly for the wife's use!:D ) and my trusty old Leica 111 - with collapsible Elmar, and probably a 1959 J8 - that performs rather nicely, about twenty rolls of Fomapan of various speeds, the Polaris spot meter - and that is it!......well! - I did say I'm boring today! :p
Dave.

Glad you are be in health. Enjoy the trip. Look forward to seeing you photos on your return.

Wish I could travel that light. I did put together a light kit for a planned trip to Germany several years ago. A Yashica FX 103, a Contax 50mm f/1.4, and three zooms covering 18mm to 150mm; dedicated flash, and a Welti 6x6 folder. That's as light as I ever planned on being. Now I might trade the 6x6 for a 9x12 folder, or worse, just add it. sigh.

just bring a lens of your preferred length and one body nd a bunch of film(or memory cards). You dont waste time deciding what combination to use for a particular shot if you dont have an option!

A D40 is a fine camera. Not pro build as you know, but you can carry it all day without breaking your back. Screw mount Leicas are the same philosophy.

Enjoy the vacation and so what if you miss some pics you needed F1.4 to capture.

Dave, I went to Egypt in Feb and travelled lighter than that, just a Ricoh GRD III for the pocketable option and a Canon G11. I recntly sold my DSLR and the G11 has for now replaced it. The G-range of cameras are pretty good as a travel option and ideal for the touristy stuff. Image quality is good and the zoom is versatile. i even used the digital zoom on a couple of occasisions and those shots were okay too.
I go off on a cruise next month to the Norwegian Fjords and I'm currently weighing up what to take along. Given the baggagge allowance for a cruise i could take every piece of gear i own. My RD1 will be going this time along with the two cams above.

My daughter went to Venice for a few days today.
I gave her my Pany FX3.
I did ask her if she wanted to take a second camera and she looked at me as if I was mad.

You're not unique Dave. I'm off to Iceland tomorrow :D

I like to travel light - usually the one rangefinder and a P&S.
However I'm traveling VERY HEAVY by my standards. M8, 35mm Summilux, 15mm Heliar, Oly E420, Kit Zoom, 17mm Pancake, battery chargers, SD cards and a tripord.

Mainly because I cannot risk going all that way and having camera failure, tripod for long exposures and I had to take a zoom in case I can't get close enough to that lovely lava.

Keeping my fingers crossed for an eruption - sorry Dave! ;)

Yup there's only one of you Dave, so you are unique! :)

Have a great holiday and steer well clear of that stuff they sell in the souk that's guaranteed to give you "three times jiggy jiggy a night" - you'll never be able to hold your camera steady!

I thought they didn't allow anything but field cameras into Turkey :D

Whatever you do, don't look suspicious and don't bring any hash with you -- or was that a movie I saw?

Have fun and enjoy a healthy, relaxing vacation!

I went to Rome in Febuary with a 24/35/50 OM-kit and finally just used the 35! It fit all my needs... You always think you're gonna need more than you will use.

Dave, enjoy your time and your trip. It is good that you travel light and be sure to post your pictures. I'm trying to put together a trip to Istanbul. Stay well and stay healthy.

Yes Dave, you are unique! Happy that your health has improved. Surely you are able to carry a Rolleicord medium format camera as well?
