Going to Mexico (Puerto Vallarta)! Advice

I have been a few times into Mexico City, loaded with a suitcase of two video cameras, mics, laptop and a couple of digitals. No problem.

Puerto Vallart is cool for city action.
With 45 minutes on a regularly scheduled bus...Head up to Sayulita for a slightly more Bohemian vibe.
On the beach it's a bustling mix of young surf culture, locals, and families. (
Boutique hotels, villas for hire, and super street food and restaurants bring people from the US, Canada, and Mexicans as well as Europe. It's a very sweet little beach town with lot's of pretty people and lively walkable streets at night.
Lot's of beaches to explore in Nayarit. Getting to know some locals is a good call. I've been on a few fun Jungle hikes as well by making local friends.

As to Cameras. I have been hassled about having a "Professional" kit only once before. I had 3 cameras with me. I explained again and again that I was not doing any comercial work. The agent finally let me through. It's a gamble with authorities in many parts of Mexico. The entire state of Nayarit is certainly one of those parts. Many expats bringing their retirement homes there creates some strange sense of entitlements. I had a GF from PV who had very good radar for the bad apples among the police.
Her rule ... the one I adopt is, If you see the Touristas go the other direction. If you see the Federales better to go inside ;)
I love Mexico and Mexican people. Enjoy your trip!

Some "local" artists hangout in Sayulita!

The official customs form lists two cameras as the limit, but in practice this is not enforced. Unless you look like you're there on a commercial shoot, you are unlikely to attract attention. I have taken 3 or 4 cameras numerous times and many rolls of film. If asked, just be honest and say you are an enthusiastic amateur photographer looking to popularize Puerta Vallarta, and you'll have no problem.
