Gomma magazine

Marko, look for Japanese photo magazines, or graphic design magazines....(I can't afford those either)...

I was too harsh on Aperture, but I think it's become a talk talk talk, theory, theory, theory publication...no eyes seem involved.

Marko, djon's suggestion for Japanese photo magazines is right on. There is some excellent photography in them. I wonder what Minor White would think of Aperture today? It is really interesting to look back at some of the older issues and compare them with the magazine as it exists today. I still think that Aperture is one of the finest photography magazines around. But even I admit that sometimes it gets a little "preachy". However, the quality of the printing of the magazine and the good young talent they showcase makes up for a lot of its shortcomings.

Shots is the best magazine of hardcore B&W photography that there is, period, say no more.

Bill, this was a new one for me. Like the look of it, and the philosophy, and they don't charge exorbitantly to ship to Canada so I've subscribed.

Thanks for your list of mags and links!

Gene, you will love Shots. If my history is correct,(if not someone please correct me) the magazine started as a self-published zine in Dallas, Texas. It has changed ownership a couple of times and is now based out of Minneapolis and is published by Russell Joslin. Since Russell has taken over, in my opinion, the quality is much better. Russell has done a great job with it. This magazine is really a labor of love as there is very little advertising inside the magazine to support it. Most of its revenue comes from subscribers. You will really enjoy it.

...I was just looking at Hobo Magazine ($8.95 USD)...beautiful stuff...lvarious portraits, especially including Philip Seymour Hoffman (played Truman Capote's role in the wonderful "Capote" ). And interesting ads, as well..blows photo mags out of the water...

The Hobo magazine looks very interesting but is also very expensive (4 issues for 60$). You have recommended japanese magazines. Any links or magazine names for me?
