good deal for a handy guy

I'm glad I noted this thread earlier because I might have been tempted - I didn't know your id before. That would have been something I'd have gotten with the idea of working on it while saving for a 7. You getting it to repair that other lens is a much better thing to happen.

Looking forward to seeing it on the VI-T and images from it.

Hi Brian,

I could use a front element for one I have that has a scratch. If you aren't planning on using the rest of the lens, maybe we could come to an agreement.

I read in the LHSA Viewfinder that the lens is considered to be just average, but I always liked it. The scratch doesn't seem to effect it, but I may be losing something, or making it more prone to flare.

You will need to collimate the lens in the new mount. There are production tolerances in both the lens mount and the lens barrel, that's why the shim has to be selected.

Might be best to send it to DAG, have him collimate it, and verify that the focusing mounts are for the same focal length group.

It will still be a great deal, wonderful lens.

The images look great. My problem is a scratch right about in the center of the element. Total of 4-5mm tapering at the edges, so possible contrast loss and flare source, I would guess.

Wish I had access to the lab. Any chance of sending my lens to you and having the collimation done?

Just how rare is the 50/1.5? I have one I picked up as part of a deal a few years ago...the glass is super clean with a couple of wipe marks, no haze inside, etc. It's heavy as stink - presuming all brass barrel. I like it a lot but dunno how uncommon they are...

I'd call them uncommon, rather than rare. The total production of these was something over 13000 units, so they are not that unusual. It has what I feel is an undeserved repurtation for being soft. As you note, you like yours a lot, most owners feel the same way.

The 50/1.5 is soft in the corners wide open, but the center is very nice. Crisps up well stopped down. Definitely heavier than the similar 50/1.8. But so much smaller than a 50/1.4 Canon, which would be silly on my IV-SB2.

Just not as collectible a name as Nikkor.

Rarity isn't everything. There are some Topcon lenses for the Super-D where they made only 1000 units, and while they fetch pretty crisp prices (say $800 to $1200), that's nothing compared to what a "1 of 1000" Nikkor or Leica lens would fetch! There are only a few of us out there who collected Topcon gear, and I'm not paying those prices for any lenses! (You can guess I'm not buying any new Leica lenses anytime soon.)
