Good guy Gary Fong rallies support for a struggling photographer under legal attack

Great read. There are bullies everywhere, unfortunately. Luckily someone stands up to them now and then.
 
This is one of the reasons wedding photography costs what it does - insurance. It's also why amateurs trying to get into wedding photography by cutting corners and costs by not taking out insurance and not having a watertight contract are taking a very big risk, although most wouldn't realise how big that risk is until it bites them.

Good on Gary Fong.

Followers on the Internet did a fantastic job of rallying behind this cause of injustice. I loved watching the amount of support we got as so many people got behind the Poon/Tang case.

A real wonderful tale and fabulous response.
It's a warning to all who do photography for a fee.
In fact even if done as a gift, one could be in trouble..
A gift may have a value..
Suggest use of document, that protects for such contingencies.
I am sure Wedding photographers use something, in States.
Never allow friendship to stop use and signing such an "understanding".
It is really wonderful being retired.
 
Many kudos to Gary Fong! The whole thing don't make sense to me though - they should know Nelson Tang don't have that kind of money if they're friends. Some think the bride was in on it, but I don't know. Wonder how the marriage is going?

I dunno Greg, it's possible that she may be just as big a scumbag as he is. According to Gary Fong, who wrote this in his account, "Nelson had traveled to Las Vegas to photograph their wedding. He had been a friend of the bride for over ten years."

The good news is that the guy dropped his lawsuit.
 
I suspect the original intent was to bully the photographer into refunding the fee.

Whether or not the wife knew would depend on the type of marriage. Though it is hard to believe in this day and age, there are still marriages in the United States where the wife has no idea what the husband is doing, and has very little right to even ask.

Likewise, even if she did know, who is she expected to support. Her old friend (who is also male) or her new husband?

Not all (American) lawyers are predatory arseholes (not least because they can't spell arse). It's just the rogue 90% that get the other 10% a bad name.

I advise having wedding clients sign a contract limiting legal action to the amount paid for the photo service.

Yea I read that & the same thought did cross my thinking but reading about how big a manipulative person this bozo is I think this might sum up their marriage.
