These days the negotiations between Canada and the European Union concerning a free trade agreement (CETA) have been successfully finished.
After the treaty has signed, it will be
- much easier
- much cheaper
for Canadian companies and Canadian photographers to buy their films, chemicals, papers, cameras etc. in the European Union.
As the supply situation in the EU is excellent, and much better compared to Canada (especially Germany and the UK have so much to offer), Canadians can profit in the future from buying in the EU.

It will be valid for both directions, of course.
99% of the import duties will be disposed. Only in 1%, in some agricultural areas, some lower import duties will remain.

except this will take another few years to ratify among the EU states :/

****, so true

well I wonder if there is a way to ship stuff from the US to Canada and then to me 🙄
Gear is so much cheaper in the US, I could pay in C41 drugstore film that is crazy cheap here. 😀

Can't see any relevance for me.
Under 400 EUR value it's already free of import duties, and the german 19% VAT is still to pay...

What have you canadians to pay for import duties at the moment? That much that CETA makes a difference for the common man?

This is of little interest to me, from the Canadian side. Duties and taxes were already low, and I never found EU pricing to be that attractive. It will still be less expensive to import from the US, IMO.

Pff. We already have a "free trade" agreement with the USA. Does it stop me from having to pay (a) unreasonable shipping costs, and (b) import duties on orders over $50? No, it does not.

Removing duties from EU based purchases? I'll believe it when I see it, but the shipping will still be a killer.

/grump

Just remember that it only applies to duties... things like sales taxes (i.e. Provincial Sales Tax) may still apply because the government has to get their share... *rolls eyes*

Cheers,
Dave

In neither of the two over $500 orders of mine from the U.S. did I have to pay "import duties." As Dave mentioned, GST, and now HST are collected. Also, at least with B&H, or orders sent by USPS, have shipping costs been "unreasonable."

(These were cameras and accessories; although I've bought film from the U.S., the total for the film was never over $500, and I didn't have to pay duty on that either, as I recall -- but the film purchases were quite a while ago, though after "Free trade.")

Then you are lucky. I believe $50 is the cutoff for duty although I may be wrong about that. Ask me about ordering online from Eddie Bauer USA sometime. 😛

I wondered if what the OP says is true, why don't Canadians buy from US stores. Remember NAFTA?

Canadian distributors can buy at lower costs in the EU with the new free trade agreement. Distributors order in higher volumes.
So yes, there is a chance that prices for EU stuff will be a bit lower in the future in Canada (and vice versa).

Cheers, Jan
