Well, Leica were true to their word. I picked up my new (replacement) M8 this afternoon. Everything seems as it should be (taken a few test shots). Interestingly though, the serial number of the replacement is about 2500 lower than the original.
Just need some half decent weather next week in South Devon.

Thanks Joe. The trouble is that until I've used it in anger for a while I'll still be nervous (and toting an alternative - Oly E400). When I've got something worth posting I will.

If your over the hill and slid down the other side It's no wonder your camera broke!
M8s even, can't take that much roughness. But seriously though good luck with this one. I can feel your joy all the way across the water.

Hey, I'm an Olympus E1 and E400 owner so I'm used to waiting. However, when Oly produce something it invariably works well.
I'm no Leicaphile - I've owned and used Leica cameras and I have Leica lenses and I have to say that they are amongst the best I have used, but that alone would not be enough to persuade me to buy a pig in a poke. What has sold me on the M8 is the image quality and it is so much better than anything else I've used (can't comment on Canon) that I will give them one more chance. However, if I have any more problems with the M8, then its gone, which would be a shame. There has, in my opinion, been a lot of "emporer's new clothes" around the M8. I bought it fully aware of the facts and expected to return it after a couple of days, but here I am putting up with a camera that so far has been much less reliable than my R-D1. My original post was simply a follow up on what had been promised to me. That promise was delivered to and that warrants posting. I would have posted my disappointment had they not delivered.

Thanks. Maybe that's what did it
