I've been on the lookout for a late 50mm Summicron (preferably in black to match my camera) and they seem to be pretty thin on the ground lately (I guess all the good ones are being bought up for M9s?). Anyway I noticed that recently KEH has a chrome 11816 Summicron in "LN-" condition for $1269. I assume it's a 11816 since it lists it as having a built-in hood.

Is this a good price for one of these? The chrome ones are brass, not aluminum, and therefore heavier than the black ones, correct? For anyone with KEH experience, how would you rate the cosmetics/mechanics of a LN- item? I was really hoping for black, but if this chrome one is really "like new (minus)" I might be tempted...

Thanks to anyone who can advise on this lens!

If KEH says LN-, then the lens should look like new. Their BGN still very good and sometimes it's better than Mint from ebay... I only buy BGN grade from them when I see BGN. If not, EX is really good but a bit pricey to me.

Based on my experiences - you an buy with confidence from KEH. Also they have an excellent return policy should the item not meet your needs/standards

Another vote for KEH. You can find black ones for cheaper - I recently bought a lovely one for $910 - but if you go for it, you will almost certainly be delighted.

Thanks to all who replied! I don't have a really good track record when it comes to snap purchasing decisions so having slept on it I think I'll hang on for a while until a really nice black one comes along (or possibly cave and get a new Summarit early in the new year...)

Best regards,
Scott

Another plus for KEH.com They ship lenses pretty fast and cheap for 2-day if you are impatient like me, usually < 15 bucks. Also - If you are interested in a 50mm summicron I have a mint on for sale - I would speak for anything available on the forum or any of the others way more than say an ebay, where everyone is there to screw you...

There is a black one in the classifieds right now. There was another one yesterday. If you want black, you can get it, and cheaper than the chrome one.

The Summicron 50 is an alltime classic, and I have always viewed such a lens as essential to own with a Leica M.

So I waited... and a black one turned up yesterday! And it was even a bit cheaper than the chrome one I was originally looking at :)

Should be here Wednesday... can't wait!
