Good user bodies getting harder to get?

I need a backup body: been looking at M2, 4, 5, 6 bodies on eBay, but I'm getting killed, because everything (just about) that's available for bid has a description like "would be near mint, save for two almost invisible scratches in top", "few bright marks", and all that crap.

My taste in cameras is for the "stopped a round for you" look: vulcanite patched with duct-tape would be fine if the mechanicals are good. Hell, I just throw 'em in my shoulder bag and use 'em.

Tim you have been assimilated, right? You need a Leica as a backup to a Leica. ;)

merciful, have you tried the FS notices on the LUG (Fridays only and today is Friday!!) and also the FS stuff on the Leica forum at photo.net. Also check out the photo.net Classifieds.

Peter, I've been looking everywhere; but I'll keep a special lookout on the LUG later today, thanks.

Merciful: i have a good user body. It's not mint but it's fully functional (although i am a bit sick now but i'm going through a CLA that hopefully will help).
But it won't be cheap! ;)

I cannot think of any better backup body for an M3 than an M2. It is truly a great combination. Kind of like putting an SP and an S3 in one bag and taking them out, one with a 50 and the other with a 35.

With Canon, you just have to have TWO Canon 7 cameras. One with a 50 F0.95 and the other with a lens that you can actually pick up and see through the viewfinder...

Now you look tactful by comparison.

with canon, i think more a p and a 7 would be the perfect combo.

and as much as i hate to post about the dark side, if it were me i would go with an m2/m3 combo also.

Yeah, I've been thinking that way, without question. But I'm also open to the right M4, 5, or 6 to hang the yet-unacquired 35mm lens from. I've become keen on the idea of trying an M5, actually.

I've become accustomed to the real thing.

Well, me too. Which is why I've just sold my R2. But not everyone is as stupid as you and I......

I still think that for a M backup that you're not going to use a lot, an R2 makes a lot of sense. Personally, I gave up carrying a full sized backup, cause one of the reasons I got into RF's was size and weight. My carry round kit now is one camera (M6) and 2 lenses (35 + 90). And if I am going further afield my backup cam is the Minox 35......

I know many of the pros carry two (or more) bodys and I can understand that when your livelihood depends on it. Just not for me...

I don't even carry one Leica body around; it sits unless I really have seious work to do. I carry a Rollei 35 everywhere, though. Just can't carry Leica gear everywhere, since I walk nearly everywhere I go.

Funny, I have a Rollei 35, in theory I should love it 'cause of fully manual, great build quality etc etc etc. But the ergonomics just drive me up the wall. Never been able to get comfortable with it.
So my pocketable is the Minox 35, in spite of the AE.

Never been able to get comfortable with it.

I found it irritating for afew days, but got used to it pretty rapidly thereafter.

Sample, at ISO 3200.
