Goodbye, DDD

Sad news.

He went into combat with my Dad's Marine Division during the Korean War and photographed some of the fiercest fighting. And he outlived my Dad by almost 50 years.

Will drink a toast to him tonight.

Thanks for sharing.

Best,
-Tim

As a WWII Marine and later LIFE photographer, he is one of my heroes. He was the only Marine photographer on the MISSOURI for the Japanese surrender. There is a great interview (video) with him on the Nikon website about putting Nikon lenses on his Leica's for covering the Korean War. His photos in LIFE made Nikon optics famous. Here is the link to the Nikon video.

it's fair to say that without DDD the japanese optic industry won't get this far. he is sort of a catalyst for that when he "discovered" Nikon 😱😱😱

This is my tribute camera to DDD. A Leica IIIc with first batch Nikkor-SC 5cm f1.4 lens. He mentions in the back of "This Is War" which pictures he took with this combo.

It's one thing to live to 102. But to live to that age, after having lived such an amazing life like that.
Wow.
