Goodies found in back room of camera shop

Nothing earth-shaking, but I went to see Harvey at Land Mark Photo today in Sierra Vista, AZ. He is an old school guy who ran a camera shop in Florida for years before retiring and moving out West.

"Got any 40.5mm or therebouts filters for one of these?" I asked, shoving a Zorki 4K at him (lens is a J8).

"God, it's you again," he said, eyeing the contents of my ruski kit bag (Kiev 4AM, Fed-2, etc.). "Come with me." I did. We went into the back room and he produced canvas bag full of "junk" as he put it. What was actually inside were about twenty leather cases full of filters, series VI adapters, etc.

What I ended up with was:

1. Walz A.1 filter that screws right onto the J8 on my Kiev 4A. Anyone know what that is?

2. Aluminum lens hood "Sonnar 42" that slips (no threads) onto the J8 on the Zorki 4K and the J8 on the Kiev 4AM. As the hood is 1" long I'm wondering if it will vignette (if that's the right term) on the J8's. Any opinions welcome.

Were they free?

In a store in Indianapolis, Robert's, they have cases of all sizes and colors in a box... and they're free.

In another store in Madison, WI, they're not. They charge you one buck per case you take away from the premises, whatever shape it is.

The abandoned filters in Central Camera are free... if I remember correctly. If there's a predominant size it's 52mm.

Glad you got some goodies! :)

Harvey has to make a living. $5.00 for the hood, the filter, and a bunch of Series VI stuff he just threw in.

But, at last, I'm in touch, in a very small way, with the Leica world. It does say "Sonnar" on the lens hood. Be still my beating heart (well, not completely still).

Darn. Just when I thought I was getting close. First baby step to LHSA.

Sure looks cool on that Zorki, though.

Walker: Thanks. I was wondering. The J8 goes to f:22, actually.

Clearly, there's but one way to find out.

Solar,
If those cases are free at Roberts, how come they always charge me a couple of bucks for one?? Iv'e been had !!

Nice find, Ted. Well, HCB did use a sonnar on his leica, so I guess you're a Leicaphile, twice removed. ;)

I just put the lens hood on the J8 attached to the Kiev 4AM, so now I'm PC. Looks great.
