Got my 2.8E Planar today!

So I picked up a 2.8E Planar today for the wonderfully low price of $200. Just couldn't not get it for that 🙂

It's in great condition. It has some minor cosmetic wear but it's mechanically perfect. 1sec is spot on, timer works, the selenium meter is even close enough to use if I were so inclined (I'm not really). My one gripe is that it's not a quick-release hood, thus harder to change the screen when I get around to it. I think I'll survive though 😛

I'm probably going to head downtown tonight to run a roll of tri-x through it. I'll post the shots and pictures of the camera once I get them.

Got it from a friend at a local Ritz. He's a good guy, gave me a very nice deal on it.

Tomorrow morning I am headed off to a nearby abandoned hospital. I'll put the Rollei through it's paces there. Hopefully I'll have the shots developed in the next day or two. In the meantime I'll try to take some shots of the camera for eyecandy 🙂

Beautiful pictures! Great deal on a great camera! My first Rollei cost me $175, but then it needed a better screen ($109) a CLA $165?) and recently the advance jammed and it needed repairing, $110. So it mounts up, but I agree that it's a pleasure to shoot, and the contacts are wonderful. I learned the trick from a co-worker of shooting tri-x with a yellow filter for better skies & foliage & skin tones and to moderate the film speed. When I need 400 ISO, I just dump the filter!

I just picked-up a beautiful Planar E with a real live Rollei hood (in the brown case), not as good a deal $200 but a good deal none the less considering the shape it is in.

What it didn't have was a neck strap - which I am looking for.... They are hard to find. Any suggestions - Luigi requires the clips which I don't have. Suggestions would appreciated.

I love the camera - it is built to last - I have shot with this model before (not mine) and I can hardly wait to run some black and white through it.

I just use a domke gripper strap - no worry about clips or such. Works perfectly.

Eventually, if I find the right clips, I might have Luigi make a strap for me. But this is fine.

Hmm, what would Luigi charge for such a strap? I actually do have a set of the clips (currently attached to the original, very frail, strap).

I found that unscrewing the trim around where the clips attach allows you put on a couple of standard ring clips. They fit nicely into the slot.

This has worked really well on My rollei for a couple of years.

If this "Luigi" spends as much on advertising for straps as he does for cases, two-thirds of the price you pay would be for the advertising.

I get sort of a kick out of his ads for cases for ancient Contaxes, Leicas, etc. Being one of those who has never been fond of "never-ready" cases, I can do without them. Not one of my cameras spends any time in a case - only the camera bag.

Awesome, AWESOME camera. Got mine for $150 but it's been to hell and back and I think someone dragged it behind their pick-up for a few miles. A good CLA later though and it takes wonderful photos. Examples here:

Warm congrats on a great acquisition Jared. If you do find it could use a CLA send it off to Paul Ebel. He's done great work on my Rolleiflexes lately. And a heck of a nice guy too. While you're at it use the money you saved and have BIll Maxwell drop ship a bright screen to Paul who will install and calibrate it for you. A world of difference.

Got my Rolleiflex planar 80 2,8 today .. I´m happy 🙂
According to the sn the camera is made in 65, and it actually were in mint condition as the salesman said. Photos to follow.
Would say it was worth 1333 usd.

I think Luigi sells mostly the half cases, which can add both a strap, protection and a better grip. Also, his straps are beautiful, and extremely well made. And no, I don't own one, just have seen them. One of these days....

The clips come up occasionally on eBay, and I bought a pair, just to put away in case. I was lucky enough to find a great strap for the one Rollei that I use.

I managed to get a couple standard rings in the center post of the Rolleiflex E strap holder - without doing any damage what so ever. Then it was to easy to pick whatever strap - and in my case the Domke gripper.

I know that "they" say that the 2.8 glass isn't as sharp as the 3.5, but who could resist those big eyes to get lost in? I dream of a 2.8 some day. Till then, the Rolleicord fits the bill with its lowly xenar. BTW, I use a gordy shoulder strap on mine, but the cord just has straigt lugs. I'd look around for clips and probably go the luigi route.
