Got my Lumix 20mm f1.7 in the mail today

Just got mine. Beautiful little lens, focuses in a heartbeat, and the results are very good on the Lumix G1. I find I really like the swiveling screen on the G1 for a lot of shots, so I will probably give the GF1 a miss.

ISO 200, F3.5, 18th St WDC.

Got mine too! Have yet to shoot extensively with it though. Here's a shot I took with it to test it's low light capabilities.

Had the chance to test a borrowed 20mm today. In general it focusses slower than the kit lens, but not so much. Took a walk along the river Rhine this evening and tested the low light capabilities. I really like it.

All photos between ISO 640 and 1000. Aperture between 1.7 and 2.2







1/4s. Had problems to focus on a running person so I focussed on the tree instead.


Even here, focus was OK.

Too bad, you can't produce bokeh-bubbles with the lens. Focus is on the lamp in the foreground at f1.7

Just got mine today as well! 20mm on the G1. My wife gave it to me as an early Christmas gift so I can use it over our Thanksgiving trip. Sooooo excited!

Its pooring rain outside today so I have been walking around the house taking pictures of almost everything and testing the bokeh, DOF, MF, etc. etc. Good times!

Note the cat's eye effect on the border of the image, a sign of optical vignetting -- this front element is definitely too small for F/1.7!

Those cat's eyes look like what I was used to with the Leica 50 Lux Pre-asph -- I really like that look. Hardly any bright edge to them. This lens looks like a real winner.

Thanks Jim. The bokeh of the Pansonic 20/1.7 is quite good for a widish lens. Here's a series of pictures taken with only varying the distance from the camera to the foreground subject. Note how the bokeh changes from one picture to the next:

Perhaps I was to fast to say that no bokeh bubbles are possible with this lens. Just need to have the right distances between fore- and background.

What object in the temple makes that bubbly looking bokeh?

These are small niches arranged in a large conical shape. Each niche contains a small representation of Tejraprabha, the Blazing Light Buddha, and each is equipped with a tiny light bulb. For a small amount of money, worshipers can have their name placed beneath these niches in order for people to pray for them. Here are a couple of other pictures taken with the 1" F/1.5 Cooke Kinic:

Uh, not quite sure the lenses are in the same league. There is a lot of difference between a 50mm lens with an F/1.0 aperture and a 20mm lens with an F/1.7 aperture! The bokeh of the Panasonic lens is very nice when the lens is focused very close (around 30cm), which is not a suitable distance for portrait, except if you intend to produce mug shots for the Police Department. At normal portrait distance (1.5m), the bokeh is not so nice and the background is only slightly blurred (like on the mosque picture with the bougainvillea in front).
