Got to play with an R3a & 40 Nokton...

Yep, I finally got up to Mainline Photographics yesterday and had a good look at the R3a, fitted with the 40 Nokton.

First, the bad news for anyone in Aus - the first batch has already sold out, they have the one Demo and that's it until the next batch comes in, they are hoping within a fortnight. VC-II meters all sold out too :(

Was pretty impressed with the camera and lens. Build quality seems pretty damn good, good feel etc etc. The lens is beautiful and smooth, and every bit as compact as it looks in the pictures.

The controls on the R3a are pretty intuitive too, the bigger shutter speed dial is nice, and the compensation (+-2 stops) for the AE works nicely. The AE lock button on the back of the camera is actually more usable than you'd think, it falls pretty naturally under your right thumb.

Loved the LED display for shutter speeds in the finder, it's identical to the Mam 7, that is, in AE mode just shows you the shutter speed (in numbers, not a dot on a scale), in manual mode it lights the "correct" shutter speed and flashes the current one. After a few tries it's obvious and intuitive.

The 1:1 finder is nice, but......the 40mm framelines are just about at the outside of the finder. I had to have my eye pretty well mashed hard against the eye cup to see the whole frame, so glasses wearers are definately not going to be happy. The 50mm framelines are fine.
Using both eyes open seems to work well, but my right eye is weak (I use my left eye at the finder normally) so I couldn't get the full effect.

I fired off the shutter and compared it to my R2, and yes, I think it's a bit quieter. It also seems less of a "kerchunk" - a less harsh sound.

ummmm...what else?

Not a lot really, the thing feels pretty damn good, consistent with all the Cosina stuff. The 40 Nokton is definately a nice looking and feeling lens, can't imagine Cosina dropping the ball on the way it images either, so I think it's going to be a really hot item. It really is quite small and neat.

The really good thing though from my point of view is that I didn't get sweaty palms wanting one! That's just personal....AE doesn't appeal, but I will admit I did like the metered manual mode.
The only thing I didn't like is the 1:1 finder, not good for someone who uses 35/28/21 lenses most of the time. But then I guess that's what the R2a is for! If you use a 50 as a standard lens it's gotta be a pretty good thing.

The rest of it is pretty much like a slightly modded R2, really. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, either.

Oh, and it has no manual shutter back up speeds. Dead battery = dead camera. Not a big deal, just something to be aware of.

OK, unfocused rambling over.... ;)

Thanks for taking the time to share. Since the used R2 bodies are going for $400 and up, I might wait for the R2A. The battery dependency doesn't bother me much and there's AE if I want it. Seems like the 50mm and up users will have another option to consider that won't break the budget. Sure hope the early buyers don't run into QC problems.

Hey Tim, I went to play with the R3A too today. Boy I didn't dare touching that thing for more than 3 minutes. Also, that camera was reserved for a guy who already paid a deposit so we couldn't take it out from the plastic wrapping.

It does feel pretty much like the R2, doesn't it. I don't know how many of you guys really use 1x viewfinder with both eyes open (and with the second eye isn't blocked by the body). It didn't feel like it's going to work well. My mate, the shop guy and myself compared it side by side with my R2 and we all agree we still need to close one eye to properly see through the viewfinder. Maybe because we are all a bunch of newbies?

I didn't even dare to touch the 40/1.4. It is so tempting. It's not as compact as I thought though especially with LH-5 hood. With hood attached, that lens is even bigger than Nokton 50/1.5!

Oh yeah I also spent 15-20 mins playing with a Rolleicord. Now I keep thinking of that mint Rolleiflex GX with Sonnar f/2.8 at "special" price of AU$2200! Must....not...give...in....to....the....temptation!!
:bang:

Just buy it Kris! No point denying yourself as you know the flesh is always weaker. I gave in to the dark side when I saw the Nokton 40mm/1.4! :p

I must admit the 40 Nokton would have tempted me if I hadn't succumbed to the lure of a 2nd hand 35 'cron last week......

Kris, ROLLEIFLEX...
forget the rest!

Is it the hood that makes the 40 so big Kris? You can always stow it with out the hood when you are not shooting and screw on the hood when you take the lens cap off.

I have reserved my 40 CLE from my great equipment sell off as a reserve should I decide I want the "Fast 40." Should I choose to, I should be able to sell the CLE for most of the cost of the 40 Nokton which will make my budget happy.

Mmmm....Rolleiflex....*Drool* Damn, I think I was just bitten by the bug! Now I need to learn how to sing to make that $2 grow into money tree! :D

Peter, does that mean there is a 40/1.4 on its way to your house?

Ralph, you're right about the hood making the lens really big. I would say the lens+hood nearly doubles the overall length and diameter of the lens alone.

Problem is, the hood can't be reversed mounted (it has bayonet mount BTW). There are lots of times where I don't carry a bag and put the camera into my pocket. I don't think it's possible with this 40/1.4 + LH-5 combo. One good reason to stay with this PII :p

I picked up my R3A from Mainline last thursday. I have to wait until xmas until i'm allowed to play with it properly though!

For me, it was always going to be 50/90 & ultrawides for me as a second camera to my Hexar RF and it fits the bill nicely.

Note though, that the RF patch is rectangular and not with the curved ends like the R2. Not a nice and mine has a slight tilt on it I suspect I should get fixed! Range is OK though. It focuses down to 0.7m, better than my R2 which always decoupled below 0.8m. Not sure if that was a defect with it but the cam follower deflinately sticks out more on min R3A than my R2, allowing it to couple closer distances.

Hi Kris, yes the Nokton 40mm/1.7 has been ordered! You should do that too! :p
