GR Digital V to have APS-C sensor

I enjoyed your writing, thanks very much for sharing 🙂

I've posted up a preview of the Ricoh GR pre-production camera based on v1.11 firmware. The article focuses on how the Ricoh GR performs as a street photography camera, instead of the technical quality of the images (which isn't accurate on a pre-production unit).

thanks for sharing Nelson, i'm a bit confused now since you've said the AF has been quite snappy but Ming Thein mentioned that he felt the AF was inconsistent

Hi, the difference in opinion may be due to different pre-production units, different shooting styles or different reference points for comparison. I'm sure Ming Thein has his reasons for saying so, but I've spent a day shooting in the streets and I've not encountered erratic focusing yet. Strangely I had problems with the auto-exposure even for straight forward scenes, but I suspect those will be fixed in the production units.

Nelson, nice preproduction unit review. I am very hopeful about the shutter sound, which you describe as comparing very favourably with the Fuji X100s. The Fuji X100 has one of the most quiet focus and shutter sounds of all my cameras, and if the GR is like that, I will be thrilled. Even the GRD III is a bit loud in some circumstances, let alone the GXR 28 with its screeching lens extension and metallic shutter click.

I had very limited time with the test unit, and I wished I had done a video to capture the quite shutter alongside with the Fuji X100s! It certainly isn't audible under most circumstances.

AF doesn't really matter - it will go wrong anyway on even the most capable professional DSLR. The original GR1 (and its siblings) has a three point contrast detection AF which is crappy both in term of speed and accuracy (all three points are vertical subjects only). Yet it is exceptionally handy on the street, as it offers the Snap mode - a feature no other competitors had at the time, and is absent on almost all cameras today.

Very informative piece. Thanks. I really want one but would have to part with my Nex 7 to fund it. Tough decision, for sure.

so Ming Thein's comparison is up ... looks like it's a tossup between the two cameras

i think my X100 is safe for now 😉

I read both of Ming's reviews and was puzzled. Ming's Coolpix A photos were of very well lit subjects, and then he praises the lens, which does look very good.

But then the Ricoh GR shots were of far more subdued and shaded subjects, wherein he pronounces the lens less stellar than the Nikon.

That's why standardized tests are necessary.
