GR Digital V to have APS-C sensor

Looks like it's worth the wait over the Coolpix A :)

The Ricoh lens looks crystal sharp into the corners compared to the Nikon A

( Just hope dpreview did not mix up the samples )

Looks like the birthday gift to myself has been decided. Preordered at BH.

And I knew there was a reason I kept my Voigtlander 28/35mm mini VF. I think this VF will be perfect for the new GR with 35mm crop function.

This will be my 3rd GR following I and III.

Irresistible little cameras aren't they Sug.
Also pre-ordered one ; soon to be joining my GR1s and GRD IV.

Yes, I knew I'd be very weak against GR, but as soon as I saw the news release, I fell.

I was debating between X20 (I got it now but can still return) vs X100s as everyday-carry & travel camera, but I've canceled X100s. X20 + GR ended up just about the same price as X100s + tax...

It's in Japanese, but Ricoh Japan's long running GR Blog got some nice comparison shots of the new GR against the predecessors, including the film GR. (Blog says just about the same size!)

Oh, and I feel Ricoh is very proud of it as they finally dropped "Digital" from the front logotype and the camera simply became, the GR.

I was not going to buy one... But it's got the gr/gxr interface but improved... The shots from the lens looks good.. So long as it can hold its own up to iso 3200 w/ that 21 adapter and crop to 35 feature... I'm pre-ordered. Looks like my rx100 days as my pocketable camera may be over....

Gary

Ps. On the other hand figuring out what camera to take on city type vacation just got easier. Rx100 in one jean pocket and the gr v in the other. :D

Btw. I ordered some wasabi batteries for my dp Merrill's on Jon recommendation that fits it and the the gr series. The battery charger fom the dp series works fine on it. My dp1m ovf will look good on the gr v. Plus I have a 21/35 finder as well... All is good.

Yep. I love snap function. First learned to use it on the gxr a12 50 lensor module. But u should check out dp review preview. Ricoh is using the most intelligent noise reduction control schemes I have ever seen in a compact camera. Did they copy that from someplace?

Wow.. looks like a great camera!! This is going to be tough - I love the Coolpix A I have now but have always wanted the GR... that said.. we'll see :) I'm happy with what the Coolpix can and does do - both in terms of Image Quality and in terms of High ISO.

Regarding the comparison on DPReview - that top left corner pic is interesting but then do me a favour and open up the full res images for both the Coolpix A and the Ricoh GR. Look at the playing cards in the top right corner. There's clearly a better image being produced by the Coolpix A vs the GR - so what's up with that? Is it DPReview's way of measuring the IQ?

Cheers,
Dave

It's been tough keeping my mouth shut, but I've been using the GR as my carry-around camera for the past two weeks or so. Really love it. Review is going up later today and I will post a link and field any questions after it does, but in the meantime here are the my keepers, full resolution for the pixel peepers:

A few are with the wide-angle adapter, they're keyworded.

Nice looking camera. I prefer the look of the Coolpix. Also, having gone through the Coolpix manual, I feel that the Nikon has some nice UI features that the GR can't match.

Having looked at the DPreview samples (the "test chart" one) I can only conclude that there's something off. Either with the cameras themselves, or in the taking of the images.

The upper left crop they sampled is by far the worst corner for the Nikon. I would actually say the the far left side favours the Ricoh. The right side is a different story. In some areas the Nikon is clearly better and that includes an area in the upper right just before the corner. The Ricoh only tops the Nikon in the extreme right corners and that, I think, is down to better handling of CA.

I don't think you can draw any absolute conclusions from these samples.

Most of those who will buy the Ricoh GR will do it because they liked the GR line throughout the years. If you've used them previously, it'll be hard to justify the Coolpix A over the GR even if the prices were the same. The coolpix is a nice camera, but the GR series ergonomics and UI are special to former users.
