Grandpa's Kodachromes

Not sure where this fits best, but I thought I would share some vintage images from my Grandpa.

I inherited about 2,700 slides spanning the late 1950's through the mid 1980's and I recently did some quick "scans" of some the images. I needed to quickly put together family images for his memorial service and while I was projecting slides and then shooting them with my camera I created a folder/portfolio of his more scenic/artistic shots.

These are from Kodachrome originals from the mid-to late 1960s. My Grandpa and his family loved to travel all around the world... These are a few of my favorites- there are many, many more:

Thanks for sharing! I never get tired of looking at old images. I need to get busy scanning some of my dads B&W negs from WWII in Belgium, France and England.

Where were the western images shot?

Really like the bottom 4 -- My 2 cents -- I think the key to what you're doing is to be ruthless with the editing and select only the best 25 - 50 -- so that it has the most impact.

Also got few thousand from my dad covering the late 50's to begin '80's. Sadly few of them are dated and located. A project for the rainy days.

These are FANTASTIC! I especially love all the period 'hints', like the woman's outfit, the guy leaning against the building, and the fins on the car. Seriously cool stuff. Thanks for posting them here.

Thanks for the replies- the people in the last two pictures are two of my aunts. Grandma is in many shots but not in these

Picture #1 is Herzo, Germany
Picture #2 is Treasure Valley, Idaho
Picture #3 is Somewhere in the SW US- not Mexico?
Picture #4 and #5 is Virginia City, Nevada?

Wonderful. Scan them all!. You never know what you'll discover inthe background. Or a cousin might say, "Wow where did that come from?"

There are services that do a fine job for not too much money if you can't get to them all yourself.

I like "Bargain Mart," "Dave's Place," and "Totem Trading Post" quite a bit. They are evocative in a way that reminds me of Stephen Shore's "American Surfaces." I wouldn't mind seeing more like those.

IMHO #4 is more likely to be Norway than Switzerland. The sign "BOKHANDEL" is valid Norwegian (or Swedish but some of the other signs are not correct Swedish). In Switzerland I'd expect signs in French or German.

Very, very cool. Thanks for sharing and man I really liked Kodachrome. I have 30+ year old transparencies that look as good as the day they were processed. These are a real treasure.

Here's a few more - two with Grandpa in the picture not by him. I will go back and hunt for more Western scenes soon.
