Recently on the Yahoo Zenit camera mail list a Filipino user (Jay Javier) sent a link to some excellent nighttime street scenes taken with a J-3 and a Fed. Photos were taken in a local ghetto, under dim or harsh lighting conditions.

In addition to being powerful social documentary, the gallery also illustrates how well the J-3 lens does. At the end there are a couple of comparison pictures taken with a Nokton and a J-3, except for a little higher contrast on the modern lens, there is very little difference.

Now I've got GAS! I want a J-3 in LTM and Contax mount...

I don't think Jay Javier is a RFF member; if so, I hope he does not mind me posting a link to his excellent gallery, which is:

Hi Leighmarrin

Member since Jan 2006! 🙂

Got a few more of those which I'll be posting soon. Those photos are part of a project about children in the streets- a project by several Filipino photographers who shoot almost exclusively with rangefinders. Many of these are also members of RFF.

Jay, once again, EXCELLENT work. Glad to know you're a RFF member; I've seen your "Zorkicat" nickname several times, but did not connect with your real name. I'll look forward to your newer pictures.

So how old is your Jupiter-3? Wonder if you had to have it adjusted to be accurate at f1.5? FWIW, one of my most-used lenses has been a '70s J-8.

Just checked your site Jay - some terrific images here. Were these taken in Manila? Hope you keep working the streets and post more of your work.

Hi in connection with Jay's Nasterfully done and eye-opening photos, if you have time you can view supplemental photos on the same subject. J3' and J-12, and fed-2 were used too Thanks.

I didn't know those new pictures, but I sure know Jay's RFF gallery: it's full of gems. First time I noticed his work, it was during the HCB contest. I remember Siesta (what a picture!) and Pain.
Now, Leigh, what Jay can do with a J3, he can do the same with a I22 or a Summitar or a Noctilux (Jay, you don't own this one, right?) ... it has nothing to do with the lens he used ... all is in his eyes.

Marc, I partially agree; HOWEVER, please see RFF member Raid Amin's recent tests of 35mm lenses under harsh lighting conditions, and in several instances there IS A SIGNIFICANT difference between certain lenses. Much of Jay's work was done under very harsh lighting, and I'm impressed how the inexpensive J-3 held up. Had Jay used an inferior lens, the impact of his photos would have been lessened by washed-out highlights and important shadow detail lost to flare.

Many (too many...) of my photos are 35mm color snapshots; I usually use a modern Cosina LTM lens for its BRIGHT colors, instead of my late '40s Summitar which has much more muted colors as shown in my limited tests.

Hi Leighmarrin

Both J-3s (one from 1950 or 53?, the other from 1960, both 'white') are used as they came. No collimation or adjustment done. I had initially thought that they had focus problems since they can't focus very well with the Zorki-1 I used them with. But when I saw that they focussed properly with Leica (IIIc and M3 with adapter), I realised that the issues lay with the Zorki and not the lenses. These lenses proved that much of what had been said about Jupiters being incompatible with Leica because they had Contax registers is largely inaccurate.

@Marc-A:

No I don't have a Noctilux...already got fine J-3s, so why would I still need one? 😀 I have Summitars too, but I like the J-8 and J-3s more 🙂
