Australia/New Zealand Great 'street' locations

No one's mentioned the street festivals!

Brunswick street festival has some great characters wandering around - in fact, Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, is probably a good summer weekend street shoot, regardless. St. Kilda festival likewise, and Acland street always - a great location & also great characters.

Cheers

I've been meaning to get to Lygon St Festa for years but can never figure out when it is. Google fails me :) The others I'd have to search the same way.

I have tried Acland st. a few times (this last Sunday being the latest). I never take a shot. Lots of people walking & gawking but I'm looking for something a bit more photogenic. Does anybody have some shots in their galleries?

IMHO, a danger with 'street photography' is that the 'location' becomes predominant in one's thinking, rather than the 'image.'
...

Now that I've met Erl, I kinda have a different take on this, and my arguing with him in this thread doesn't work any more.

This guy took what looked to me like thousands of shots in the 2 hours we were chatting. I think that for Erl - making a shot from nothing much is just how he works. For me, I have taken too many shots of what looked to me at the time like interesting faces only to find out later that the lack of location (actually light, background, line-ups, motion) makes the final shot rather worthless. So now I look for those other compositional elements - and because they are rare in combination I try to set them up by choosing location. e.g. here's a place where walkers are funneled through a narrow opening where the light is OK, all I need to do is get the timing right.

It'd be great to see some of those RD-1 shots Erl.

Thanks,
James
