Hi,

I just bought an Epson 3800 and I spent the last week doing some tests using the Canson Rag Photographique paper.

I only work with b&w images so I'm using the ABW mode within Photoshop on Mac OSX, but I can't make neutral bw prints, it keeps coming out with a green tint. I'm comparing my test prints with a b&w print made by a friend (Epson 3880 + Epson Velvet paper) and the difference is astonishing!

I did a nozzle check and everything looks ok as you can see it here:

Here's my print dialog box settings:

Any thoughts?

You have high speed selected, to me it is way to ruin prints. But I can't find anywhere "grey only" box checked. This is the only way I know how to print bw with Epson printers.
It is not only black inks mode, btw.

Thanks for the input. I will do a test without the High Speed mode.

I have a 3880 and 7800 that I mainly print B&W art prints with. My suggestion, download Quadtone Rip. It's free or you can pay $50 if you like it. You have tremendous control over your print with absolutely no color shift.

The only time I use photoshop to print from is some of my color.

Looking at what you're doing you're letting your printer driver manage the color. You should never do that. Go to the menu in the printer driver and tell it to do no color management. Let photoshop manage color. I'm not sure where it is in your driver but you want photoshop to manage everything and bypass the color settings in the 3800. Photoshop should be set for perceptual and the paper you're using. Download the appropriate color profile from chanson for your paper and printer and install it. No need to print blacks only. Use all inks and you'll be fine.

Even better get Quadtone Rip. It's the professional route at little to no cost. It bypasses photoshop and the Epson drivers.

Hey x-ray,

thanks for the suggestion!

After reading about the Quadtone Rip I run some tests with its Print Tool. The prints are REALLY dark. On the other hand it seems to be a great alternative to get neutral b&w prints. I just need to find why the prints are way too dark.

Here's my settings (I'm printing on a luster paper):

And here's the print problem in question:

Would you care to share your b&w workflow with the Quadtone Rip?

there are sliders provided to fine tune the print. Once they're set you won't need to adjust them unless you change paper. Give the sliders a try. I need to look at where I have things set. I'll check this evening when I get back home.
