Grinding off strap lugs

My 1933 ll doesn't have lugs and it really does add to the minimal look of the camera. I've named it Douglas ... as in 'Lugless Douglas!' 😱

An old strap lug that will already be worn pretty smooth is unlikely to compromise a coat or jacket pocket IMO ... what would HCB do?

Oh hang on that's right ... he always had his camera in his hand waiting for decisive moments! 😀

How on earth would a strap lug wear through a jacket? They are smooth and rounded. And I have never had a problem. In principle your camera could be going long after you are dust. Please think carefully about damaging something that you are only custodian of for a time.

When the camera is supported by both strap lugs, the strap places a shear load on the lugs. Another way to say this is that the pull is at right angles to the lug holes. But when you dangle the camera from one lug, now you have a tension load, pulling the lug directly away from the body. Under those conditions, the lug can pull right out of the camera. It can, and it will. Murphy's law requires it. The camera will then accelerate at 16 feet per second per second until it strikes something. Murphy's law requires that it must happen, as a minimum, while you are standing on concrete. It is also likely to happen while you are leaning out over a third-story balcony, with a concrete walk some 35 feet below. When that happens, the end of it that strikes first will decelerate very rapidly, resulting in a change in appearance and functionality.

If you didn't follow that, just know that a straight pull on a strap lug can eventually pull it out.

I recommend you forget the whole thing.

What a lot of fuss about nothing. It is his camera, he can do what he likes to it. It is not a national treasure.
A wrist strap is a good protection for an accidental drop of a camera. Nobody walks around with it swinging from their wrist. The wrist straps that fit into the tripod socket are really inconvenient.(try one and you will see).
I use a wrist strap connected to one strap lug on lots of different cameras, it is the best way for me. I wouldn't bother to cut the other lug off, but everyone to their own.

put tape over it

Grind it off and the inside half will fall into the camera and you get a MAJOR light leak.

Further is one strong enough.

You can not home engineer changes near perfection .

I don't believe either that the strap lugs will harm the clothing, but the one on the M4 was really hurting my nose. As Baranack's eyepieces are farther from the lug this seems not to be an issue here?

Wow this thread is still alive. Next time I will have my morning cofee before I make a post. I totally forgot I posted this. I didnt mean to cause a debate. Blame it all on the Leica II. I was close to buying one, but just cant afford $675.00 for it and the lens. So instead I bought a bargain III for pretty cheap at KEH. Hopefully It will help me forget about the Leca II forever or at least untill I can afford A decent one. My Leica III will have Lugs but please dont call the police, I dont think I am going to chop them off. I will remeber to take my medication and the leica III should be happy with me (as long as it works all the time perfectly 😡)

Lawnpotter,

My "everyday" LTM shooter is an "ugly" 1934 Leica III, s/n 134xxx that scored on e-bay for about $150.

It came with a 3.5 Komura 35mm lens that I put away in the cupboard.

This frowsy-looking Barnack ( peeling chrome on top-plate ) has worked very reliably for me for over three years now, and probably nearly 100 rolls of film.

Share some pics when yours arrives...

Regards,
LF

I completely agree.

Thanks luddite Frank, I am looking forward to seeing it, dont want to get to excited though. It is a BGN 70 year old camera from KEH so it wont be perfect. I cant wait to see the strap lugs. the guy at KEH told me that the strap lugs are the best thing about the camera, I hope I dont scratch them 😀

Well, catching a lug on a pocket is.... not a problem. Filing down is a problem.

Using a wrist strap is not a problem. How can it be if you carry the camera as if there is no wrist strap at all? Just slip the wrist strap around your wrist and carry the camera in any fashion you feel comfortable with as long as the strap is for insurance against dropping it and you don't dangle the camera.🙂

Why would anyone "dangle" a camera by a wrist strap?🙄 Do you "dangle" with a neck strap? What is the angle of the dangle anyway?😀
