Grip glue?

Hi guys

My R-D1 rubber (rear part) needs glueing down. Any advice on what to use? I'm in the UK so it must be something I can get here!

Previous stuff was a black gummy kind of substance. I wouldn't be surprised to find it was some sort of double sided tape?

I have used transparent sealing silicone. Clean both surfaces with alcohol and apply the silicone. Hold the rubber grip in place with tape, elastic bands, etc, for 24 hours.

If the rubber grip has expanded with age, you might need to trim it so that there is no air space in between. Remove excess silicone with a cutter when it has dried out.

A contact adhesive is the usual recommendation in most repair books. I use a generic one from a local discount store, the advantage is it does not form a rigid bond but still adheres. In the event removal is required it can be peeled back without damage to either leatherette or camera. I've done many Rollei TLRs and other cameras this way with very satisfactory results. Any accidental application is easily removed by balling up the residue after it has tacked and peeling off with a fingernail or using a cloth dampened with a little naptha. Less is more!

+1 for contact cement.
But. use it only on one surface, not on two as the instructions recommend As a contact it will grab instantly as a single surface cement you have the ability to move things around a bit.

Good advice. The lack of that knowledge is why I don't often use contact cement.
