On my DSLRs, I'm asking for a gigantic camera, so whether or not I have a pro body (i.e. D2x) or not (i.e. D700) I always make sure the camera has a grip on it. But the whole point of my Leica is small....so I never put a grip on it.

You might think differently if you put a BP 90/2 AA on an M6 to hand carry. The camera isn't big, but a heavy lens will unbalance it and make it very difficult to carry in the hand. A grip solves all that.

Very true....but in my case one of the requirements for me and my M2 is a small lens--that's why I bought the CV 35/2.5 pancake. Tiny.

Big lenses are why I always grip my D700 though; a 70-200 f/2.8 needs a big body to balance it out.

For the big 90 Summicrons the Leicavit M adds great balance. I like it ( the 'vit ) on the camera no matter the lens mounted. That's grip enough for me.

Yesterday, I ordered my first grip. It is a Bessa Grip. At $30 I could not say No. It may be useful for holding on to a camera with lens. I have still to try it out.

Arthritic hand means a grip is a necessity for me. I can hold an M with even an Elmar-M on it for about five minutes without a grip before I'm ready to throw it across the room.

I have Rapidgrips on every film M, couldn't work without them. Modded one for my M5 even. I've got the PhotoEquip MD grip on my M8, but would prefer a Rapidgrip (hint hint Tom). Put this grip on my D-Lux 3 with a little filing to allow the battery/card door to open.

Well the Bessa side grip won't work. I currently am without grip, but want one. The R-D1 is not a heavyweight, but not a featherweight either, and with rather stiff fingers I'm pining for a better hold on the camera.

Inspired by a Japanese vendor on Ebay, I've made a grip out of oak wood. Will be trying it out once the lacquer dries.

I always carry my camera's in one hand (Zeiss Ikon ZM, M2, III, M8), never use a grip (just a strap - which is just a piece of cord I made myself - around my wrist). On the M8 I use the ThumbsUp though, which is wonderful, gives you a lot of control over the camerabody (more a matter of orientation than grip).
