Those do look pretty sweet...gonna try and do some research on them.

$139.99 looks straight out of fondler's heaven! I've been shooting Leicas since 1961 and haven't had one slip out of my hand yet. Then first you have to take the grip off of the baseplate before you can take the baseplate off of the camera when it's film changing time. Send me the $139.99 and I'll send you a nice signed thank you note written in the margin of a gelatin silver print. At least you can look at it instead of mourning the monetary loss.

Of course that red one would look mighty cool on a white paint Leica with genuine lizard skin leather for stealthy street photography. Nobody would ever guess that it's a real camera!

That central tripod screw won't fit an M anyway, and 140 bucks is a lot to spend on a Bessa accessory.

Al, I've been shooting Leicas for a long time too and I find the grips very helpful for a couple of reasons. And I'm generally loathe to use "accessories". To each his own? Please note that this grip is not advertised to work on Leica M cameras, and that those grips that ARE made for Leicas stay put, no need to remove them to reload. I find they make the baseplate easier to hang on to while reloading, actually.

al, are you getting grumpy these days? 😉
the grip is important to me for more than fondling reasons.
i cannot use a neck strap and so i prefer a good wrist strap when i am out shooting. i don't like to keep my camera in the bag as i would wind up shooting much less. this means i basically carry the camera in my hand for hours at a time. using a grip makes it so much easier on my old arthritic hands. i would prefer to spend much less than a 140 bucks but so far this looks like my best and maybe only choice.

if anyone has a line on the new epson brand grip for the rd1x please speak up.

I also usually don't go for add-ons. But I have wrestled on this subject for grips for quite some time. I just didn't care to spend the money and then find out I didn't care for it. Well, I found a slightly more recent (but not current) version of the grip by photoequip for about $25 aned figured I couldn't lose. I didn't. I love the thing. It's MUCH easier to work with the camera now. And there is no need to remove the grip and baseplate separately, Al. The only thing I don;t like is that I've become very good at holding the thin baseplate btween my two small fingers as I load, while still holding the camera in the same hand. Now the baseplate/grip is a bit heavier, but I still manage.

I used to have grips for m3 and m6 when I had them. Now I prefer Zhou half cases with builtin grip for both - M5 and Rd1s. Yes, I have to take camera out of it to change film/battery/card, but it fits well, feels good in hand, protects camera and is not very expensive.
 
Some of you guys would have heart attacks watching me activly shoot. I usually have one camera with a wide (35) or ultra-wide (21 or 15) in my right hand with a wrap of the neckstrap around the wrist. A second camera with another wide or an 85 is held by the strap dangling from the left hand (not wrist). When I want to use that camera I grab it with my right hand and simply let go of the camera that was in that hand. It just hangs there from my wrist. I've never dropped one while doing that.

I guess that there will always be a disconnect between those who buy Leicas as jewelry and those who buy them as tools. Maybe twenty or thirty years down the road the jewelry will bring more money when you sell it, but it won't compare with the amount of money that the tool earned over that time frame.

If you like grips go ahead and use them.
 
I shoot similarly to you Al. I have narrow but large hands and fingers. I need a grip on an M.

They would drive me mad if you need to do this to change film. All the grips I've used let you change film without taking the grip off. I strongly prefer Tom A's grips but that's probably mostly about hand shape and size.

Use whatever works best for you. I'm in love with those soft nylon Nikon straps with the leather no-slip piece sewed in them. The ones I have are a nice stealthy yellow and black! That way I don't need a red anodized aluminum grip to see where I left my camera.
